Governor Gray Davis has instructed his staff to review how California could enact civil union legislation, the Bay Area Reporter has learned.
While the staff working group likely will look at various issues of concern to the gay community, it's main priority will be to analyze and review the issue of civil unions. Davis and his staff are in the process of selecting people to serve on the 12- to 15- member panel that could meet as early as next summer.
I am establishing a task force to review what Vermont has done to find out if any of those measures are applicable to California, Davis told the BAR in an interview last week. "This is a relatively new concept. Vermont is the only place which adopted it."

He's lying. He just brought this up in January.
Here's the proof.

Conservatives hail shelving of civil-unions bill
But the measure's author vows he won't let the issue disappear.

Conservative religious groups are hailing an early victory in what promises to be a multiyear fight over legislation allowing Vermont-style civil unions in California.
---snip---
Benjamin Lopez, legislative analyst for the Traditional Values Coalition, said he was not surprised that the bill was pulled given the fact that an election looms.
----snip---
Lopez said civil unions are gay marriages by another name.
"It's a matter of semantics to use another name and get all the benefits of marriage," Lopez said. "The people have spoken and said no to them."

I guess the fact that we voted against this means nothing to Davis.

Well he needs to crank out the number of homosexuals on election day to help his chance of victory.

I think old Gray is going to do a Clinton. He's going to do as much damage as he possibly can on his way out and leave Simon with a mess.

Davis is gone this fall and he knows it. He is just poisoning the wells before he goes.

It looks like Grayout Davis is desperate for votes. So much he's scraping the sludge from bottom of the vote barrel. Do you suppose the mutants are all he has left?

This is California where democrap politicians tell the voters to shove everything. Yes, we passed Prop 22 that states marriage is between a man and a woman. Then the legislators got together and started passing laws to overturn the voters' wishes. They are sort of getting away with it, too. Gov. "Gay" Davis is the largest pile of crap known to man or beast. Nothing surprises us. For victory & freedom!!!
To: upchuck
The problem in California is that we have an activist judicial system that overturned 187 and 227, things we voted for. Anything the people vote for is overturned if the libs don't like it.

I feel that Simon's gotta win. Just has to. It's urgent, you know?

On the money. Another ploy to get votes. Is he calculating how many votes he's ticking off with these 'in your face' tactics?
This must mean we can expect more garbage legislation as he trys to pick up the cockroach vote.

Gays are mutants huh ? How compassionately conservative you are. I suppose in the 60's you would have called the Civil Rights Act scraping the bottom of the barrel by appealing to the nigg... No way. Only if they were homosexual mutants. Skin color isn't an abomination.
Use you head.

Hopefully his staff will publish a report one week before the 2002 elections.
