NY Jews vote Dimocrat because their fathers and their fathers' fathers did, and because the Dims are the party of big government, and they've done this since long before anyone ever heard of "the religious right".
Many groups voted Democrat because they were born into it. But nearly all of them, Catholics for instance, split off by the third generation. There is a reason why Jews have not. And while animosity toward those in the GOP who try to convert others is not the only reason, it is a factor. You even see it in the GOP. It was no accident that prominent neocons such as Podhoretz, Saffire, Kristol and Jonah Goldberg were delighted with McCain's comments about evangelicals during the primaries. Everyone of them wrote an article praising McCain for saying what I suspect they've wanted said for years.
