MSNBC: Ari Fleischer To Blast Clinton Administration At 12:30
MSNBC | 2-28-02 | My Favorite Headache

Posted on 02/28/2002 7:30:09 AM PST by My Favorite Headache

Just heard a news break from Rick Sanchez saying the Bush administration is going to hold the Clinton administration responsible for pressing peace talks in a volatile situation that they knew would result in more violence against Israel beginning in 2000....more to follow during briefing. But apparently Ari is going to have something big to say on this and where the U.S. is going to go with the situation in Israel and the war on terrorism.

And I already told you: "Sorry, but 'almost 50%' of about 40% (or less than 20%) doesn't impress me."

H***, Bush got 30% or so of the HISPANIC vote, and they are kow-towed to outrageously by DemsLibs.

Israel is just another European socialist state transplanted to the Middle East.

I look at the State of Israel about like I look at France.

Hey everyone! Shepard Smith of FNC is asking viewers NOW what do you think of Ari's comments this afternoon? Do you think Ari's putting the blame on the lack of peace in the Mideast on former Pres. Clinton?

I watched as President Bush trashed (he was not my first choice, but glad he won) one candidate after another to get where he is today, he spent millions, 30mil., just going after one person. The least he could do is come forward for his nominee's and defend his decissions for nominating them in the first place.

I am sick to death of watching people fall by the way-side because a president (any president) will not speak up for fear of dirtying their own laundry, we call folks like these, "fair weather friends."

I sure thought after Sept.11 we had a warrior but after watching him just sit there and take all of the BS coming out of Daschle's mouth, I beginning to wonder where he fell off his horse.

Ari is using PRESS REPORTS from 2000 that the violence started on 9/29/00 after the Camp David meetings failed...he's using the PRESS REPORTS at the time to make the point that CLINTON'S FAILURE LED TO TODAY'S VIOLENCE.

This is sweet!

The White house has backed down from these statements as of the time of this posting. That didn't last long.

I must assume you were a McCain supporter. I can't offer a comment beause I missed this entire flapdoodle today.

I am growing quite tired of the complaining because you think President Bush isin't supporting people. That is not true. Merely because someone in the press says it does not make it true.

Ari may have said more than he was authorized to say. It happens.

I think it was a quick strike aimed directly at Tom Daschle, who just today signaled the democrats are going to now openly criticize Bush's war effort.

If the dimocrats deride GWB's war effort they will be digging their own grave and throwing the dirt on top of themselves. Incredible. They must really be searching for ANYTHING at all to criticize.

The American people are with W.

Thanks for the clarification, Utah Girl. Sometimes I think it's obvious that Ari wants to say more than he is allowed to say, but his outrage is restrained.

The reporter said you never criticize a former president.

Former presidents are also never supposed to criticize the current president. But Bubba is, and Carter, and the media lapdogs gleefully report every word of it, without mentioning anything about how "they shouldn't do it."

Face it, Clinton-loving media: Bubba destroyed the old rules. And now we're going to use the new anything-goes system against you just as you used it against us.

Bush Spokesman Says Ex-President Clinton to Blame for Today's Mideast Violence
By Sonya Ross Associated Press Writer
Published: Feb 28, 2002

WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House on Thursday suggested that aggressive diplomacy by former President Clinton triggered an increase of violence in the Middle East. "In an attempt to shoot the moon and get nothing, more violence resulted," President Bush's spokesman said. Later, White House press secretary Ari Fleischer said he spoke in error.

"I mistakenly suggested that increasing violence in the Middle East was attributable to the peace efforts that were under way in 2000. That is not the position of the administration," he said. "The only people to blame for violence are the terrorists who engage in it. I regret any implication to the contrary."

Fleischer issued the statement after members of Bush's national security team privately expressed alarm over the characterizations of his initial remarks. They feared it would signal that Bush was not interested in becoming fully engaged in the peace process and might even think it would hurt to be closely involved.

In a morning briefing with reporters, Fleischer rejected the notion that Bush's Middle East policies have not worked, and noted that the violence began while Clinton was still in office. And he turned aside the idea of talking with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat as Clinton did, saying Bush does not want to create false expectations.

Clinton spokeswoman Julia Payne called Fleischer's criticism unfortunate. She defended Clinton's active role in peace negotiations, saying Clinton acted "at the strong request of the parties" and out of "our deep concern that the situation would descend into violence in the absence of peace."

Asked about the Clinton administration's peace effort, Fleischer said: "Actually, I think if you go back to when the violence began, you can make the case that in an attempt to shoot the moon and get nothing, more violence resulted; that as a result of an attempt to push the parties beyond where they were willing to go, that it led to expectations that were raised to such a high level that it turned into violence. And that took place as a result of trying to push for an agreement that was not reachable at the time because the parties didn't want to agree to what the United States was pushing for."

During his last months in office, Clinton was heavily engaged in pressing Arafat and then-Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak to strike an accord, but his intensive diplomacy failed.

Fleischer did not specifically mention Clinton, but was clearly talking about Bush's predecessor. He noted that "the violence really began at the end of 2000" - during Clinton's term - "and accelerated through 2001."

"It is important to be careful in the region, to proceed at a pace that is achievable and doable, and not to raise people's expectations falsely too high," Fleischer said. "The failure to reach that level created unmet expectations."

Later, Fleischer said it would be wrong to characterize his remarks as a criticism of Clinton. He said he was simply rebutting the suggestion that violence began because of the lack of Mideast talks under the Bush administration.

"No United States president is to blame for violence in the Middle East," Fleischer said.

Meanwhile, the administration expressed concerned about Israeli's assault on two West Bank refugee camps. State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said the administration respects Israel's right to defend itself, but the United States is "especially concerned" about the move on the refugee camp.

"Every effort should be made to avoid harm to civilians," he said.

Israel, the West Bank and Gaza have been wracked by violence for 17 months and it continued Wednesday, when Israeli troops killed four Arabs in gunbattles and, separately, a Palestinian worker shot an Israeli factory manager to death.

This week, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia floated an idea for ending the violence and renewing peace talks. Both Israel and the Palestinians have expressed interest in the Saudi proposal, though the Israelis reject a main element - withdrawal from all of the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem.

The Saudis suggest that in exchange, the entire Arab world would make peace with Israel.

Bush also likes the Saudi plan, but continues to press Arafat to rein in militants with more arrests.

"The most concrete thing the president is looking for (from Arafat) is a 100 percent effort to stop the violence," Fleischer said. "The president wants to make sure people are detained on a long-term permanent basis, not on a temporary revolving-door basis."
