NEW YORK -- The firefighters' movements are calm as they arrive at the burning north tower of the World Trade Center. Their eyes grow wide as the magnitude of their mission becomes clear. Then come the thumps -- one after another -- and a voice saying that people are jumping.

The tape by brothers Gedeon and Jules Naudet is an extraordinary account of courage and dread, of composure under pressure and of the cataclysmic moments that, for many of the men captured on it, were their last.

This film will be shown in March and supposedly is worth seeing. By chance, the first plane hitting was captured by the film maker.

The two young "Frenchmen" were profiled this month in Vanity Fair. Their parents are French but they have lived their whole lives in Manhattan not far from the WTC.

Their first film was about boxing and they then petitioned the New York Fire Department to do a film on firefighters. The waited weeks in one of the ladder companies. They went out one morning for a gas leak and were caught in the middle of 9-11.

I'd say this is a film to catch!

Agreed, this is a film to see.

The terrorist criminals should not be forgotten nor forgiven.

March 9th? Is that the day of the film? Vanity Fair gives a good representation of the film and it looks like it's going to be utterly awesome.

Never forget ...

No, it's going to be shown March 10th. I'm giving myself an extra day to stock up on essentials....just reading about this made me start to choke up, though.

I am so glad this tape is being released to the public. I feel so many Americans do not understand the magnitude of 911 and this can only help give people a back bone. Resolve needs to be first and foremost in the American people and sadly I see many slipping.

I have not gone to Ground Zero yet but a few weeks ago we went to Father Judges church and fire house. The feeling of grief was overwhelming. I can compare it to losing my mother in 1989 suddendly. We all had tears and the firemen were so nice to us. It seemed they were happy we cared and came in. It can not be forgotten how many care.

CBS plans to air footage on March 10 to commemorate the six-month anniversary of the attacks.

It's a two-hour film.

Why do I suspect that CBS will heavily edit this, using it as a showcase for Dan Rather and a few other CBS reporters with only little snippets of the film in between?

We might see 20-30 minutes of it, I'd guess.

For as many Americans you see slipping, I still see many Americans full force ahead. We are aware that 9/11 changed our lives forever. But, yes, we need to see this CBS film and I'm glad they will show it. Do you know what time it will air? Thanks.

Gosh I hope they don't edit it. I wouldn't be surprised if it is available to the public at some point. There was mention in Vanity Fair that profits went to the firefighters.

I'm not sure how edited this (TV) version will be, but the Vanity Fair article mentions that the same movie will be shown in movie theatres also! Can you imagine seeing this on a big screen? I hear that hollywood already has 3 movies in production about 9-11 but none of them will ever be able to touch this....I believe the movie version is 2 hours or so, but the VF article also mentions that from when the first plane hit (while they were fixing the gas leak) his camera did not quit rolling for 8 hours except swapping film.

FYI

911 host - Robert DeNiro

DeNiro to host CBS's '9/11' doc: Robert De Niro has been signed by CBS to host "9/11," the exclusive behind-the-scenes video account of the terrorist-led plane crashes into New York's World Trade Center towers. The eyewitness story, shot by French filmmakers Gedeon and Jules Naudet, will be broadcast by CBS as a special two-hour presentation on Sunday, March 10 (9 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET).

Mr. De Niro, who has won two Academy Awards for acting ("Raging Bull," "The Godfather: Part II"), is also a director and producer whose Tribeca Film Center is located just a few blocks from Ground Zero at the WTC site.

The presentation of "9/11" will help support the fund-raising efforts of the Uniformed Firefighters Association Scholarship Fund for the benefit of firefighters' families, including contributions from the Naudet brothers and CBS. The broadcast of "9/11" will include information about how viewers can also support the fund.

CBS News' Susan Zirinsky is executive producer of the CBS broadcast, along with Gedeon and Jules Naudet, Ladder 1 firefighter James Hanlon and CBS News' Hal Gessner and Tom Forman, who are executive editor and senior producer, respectively. Betsy West, senior vice president of CBS News, is executive in charge.

Mr. Carter and Vanity Fair's David Friend, editor of creative development, will also serve as executive producers of the broadcast. Vanity Fair ran an exclusive interview with the Naudet brothers in the magazine's current issue. The project was brought to CBS by Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter, the William Morris Agency's President and Co-CEO Jim Wiatt and Ben Silverman, WMA's head of international development.
