Body from car was defendant in driver's license case, medical examiner rules

Katherine Smith identified through dental records; cause of death pending

By By Bill Dries dries@gomemphis.com

A Memphis woman allegedly at the center of a scheme to sell fraudulent Tennessee driver's licenses has been identified as the person whose burned body was found early Sunday in the wreckage of a car in Fayette County, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Lt. Col. Mark Fagan said Katherine Smith was identified by the Shelby County Medical Examiner's office through dental records. The office also found "evidence of smoke inhalation," Fagan said. This indicates Smith was alive when her car left the road, crossed a ditch and ran into a utility pole.

The Highway Patrol, which is investigating the crash, is awaiting a rule on the cause of death from the medical examiner in Fayette County. Fagan said he did not know when the report would be completed.

Smith and five men with ties to the Mid-East were charged last Wednesday in a federal complaint with conspiracy to obtain fraudulent identification documents.

Smith was free pending a detention hearing Monday in federal Magistrate Court. Her five codefendants have been held without bond since their arrests last Wednesday.

Federal prosecutor Tim DiScenza told U.S. Magistrate Judge Diane Vescovo on Monday that Smith's death was "most unusual and suspicious."

He also said two of her five codefendants had "connections" to the World Trade Center, which was destroyed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

But defense attorney Anthony Helm told the court there was no indication the defendants were connected to terrorism. He said the prosecutors are making the terrorism implications only because the defendants are from the Middle East.

!!!Quick, call the FBI!!!

"Don't worry, we hve one of our best teams on it."

Detective Ryan: "Can I ask what you think may have happened?"
Mulder: "At first blush, spontaneous human combustion."
Scully: [to Ryan] "You're doing just fine."
[Follows Mulder] "Having a little fun?"
Mulder: "What are you talking about?"
Scully: "Spontaneous human combustion?"
Mulder: "I have over a dozen case files of human bodies reduced to ash without any attendant burning or melting. Rapid oxidation without heat."
Scully: "Let's just forget for the moment that there's no scientific theory to support it."
Mulder: "Okay."

Pretty good object lesson for others who have been collaborating with terrorists: don't cross us.

FBI agent J. Suzanne Nash said the gas tank did not explode and the car was only slightly dented from the crash.

Obviously a clumsy attempt to cover up the murder of the State's witness against the A-rab terrorists buying fraudulent driving licenses.

Wake up, Tennessee!

Fortunately the word is out - many states and airlines no longer accept Tennessee driving licenses as valid identification.

Heck - In Dallas we give them pilots license and put them to work flying airplanes for American Eagle. (AMR=American Airlines) I am sure you heard about that. The guy was arrested at DFW for forging false documents etc. I heard on the radio today that they are not going to give him 10 years in prison, they are just going to start deportation proceeding on him. Only in America!!
