I think it stems from suras 4.24 and 33.50. The Muslim man is allowed to take female slaves in marriage (those whom the 'right hand possesses'). Also,in order to have sexual relations with these women or any woman for that matter, many men enter into a 'Mut'a' which is a temporary marriage. After the affair, the man simply states that he divorces her and sends her on her merry way. As I stated above, this happens often in Sudan, Egypt and even Saudi Arabia (as reported by Philipinos that are returned home afterwards). The women in Sudan are enslaved and frequently the man of the house will repeatedly rape the female legally by proclaiming a Mut'a. It may not be exactly what Mohammed envisioned, but it is practiced.
