Import ban on foreign-made ammo?
me | Feb 8, 2002 | me

Posted on 02/08/2002 11:39:10 AM PST by SauronOfMordor

I just called up Dillon Precision to order some .45 ammo. The order-taker tells me they are all out of Wolf and Sellier&Bellot ammo, and that the reason is that there are new restrictions on the importation of foreign-made ammo since 9/11

I then call up Cabella's, they're out. I go to the SportsmansGuide.com web site, they're out of stock on Wolf and Sellier, same deal at cheaperthandirt.com

Maybe we do not really know the full extent to which people have been buying guns and ammo since 9/11. You think the media is really going to report the truth.

BINGO!!! People have been buying like mad since 9/11, and they really haven't slowed down.

Local shop I go to in Spring is usually real busy during the hunting season, Sept-Dec., but this year the buying frenzy is still going on. I haven't seen this many people out on the shooting range since the days just after Brady went into effect.

This will probably die down in a couple of months if nothing else happens, and the ammo supply will return.

In the mean time, learn to reload. Its fun.

I've had a hankering for a Mini 14 for a long time but never found the right one at the right price. Any suggestions on what to look for ?

the mini is a great plinker. depends on what you want it for. you want defensive reliability, get an AR

you want some inexpensive fun, get the mini. mine's very reliable, but very isn't good enough
when the fit hits the shan. got mine at a pawn shop... the barrel was dirty, but a quick swab
proved it hadn't been shot much. $220 with leopold rings and a couple mags...(it's the mini-14 ranch model)

or, sell a kidney and buy an AR. again, depends on what you want it for.

Might want to take a look at the AK family. Plenty of hi-caps out there. An AK with a drum is a whole lot of fun!

In Nov. or Dec. at the Ft. Worth Cheaper Than Dirt they had Silver Bear 7.62x39 they were selling but had very little Wolf.I got the idea they were maybe going to replace Wolf with S.B. but I could have misunderstood.

Silver Bear is terribly shiney and I haven't tried it out yet.Anyone know if S.B. is decent ammo?

Conley Precision Cartridge loads are max pressure. Definitely hot stuff! Factory new loads. Never had a jam/stovepipe in my Coonan .357 magnum (no, not sig), and the Coonans are about as finnicky as it gets when it comes to proper loads! The hotter the better. Easily as hot as any IMI I've fired with the same reliability. I tried the CPC after I have had trouble finding the IMI loads.

Some prices and velocities...
.357 158 Gr. JHP is @ 1450fps $14.88/box
.40 S&W 180 Gr. 160fps $15.79/box
>.45 ACP 230 Gr. FMJ 900fps $15.99/box
.45 ACP 230 Gr. HP-XTP (hornaday) 900fps $23.50/box
.308 win. 165 Gr. BTSP 2700fps $23.91/box

Buy 5 boxes or more and shipping is included. CPC is a domestic company.CPC

And as long as we're posting the obligatory photos...

LOL! I guess the .40 S&W is a bit of an error! At 160 fps, you might as well just throw the whole gun at a perp(kinda like haeley davidson and the marlboro man)!

Meant to say 1060fps
.40 S&W 155 Gr. 1180fps $15.89/box

but how about that .357 mag 125 Gr. @1750fps! ouch! $14.78.box

However they are indicating that they are sold out of Wolf 223 due to the 9/11 attack.

The thing that doesn't add up is that it's 5 months since 9/11. Yes, lots of people stocked up in September, but you would expect the suppliers and manufactorers to have re-stocked by this point

How far in advance would overseas orders have to be made to be filled?Could shipping itself be the problem?

Good to see she drives on the left, shoots with the right. I have a .40 Glock, mod 22 and enjoy shooting re-loads mixed and matched with various brands.
I had a smith in St. Paul go thru the gun AFTER IT JAMMED ON THE FIRST BOX of new Black Talons. He put on the Trijicon sights and trimmed the trigger to about 3 pounds from the itchy 7-8 pound release it came with. Took my insurance man/shooting buddy to the range to show it off and he put one in the cieling.

Yow--that's a light trigger, Eric !

Import ban on foreign-made ammo?

Why do they need to import a ban.

Can`t they use a homegrown one?

Last weekend I traded 2 Winchester model-70s and one Browning A-5 light-12 shotgun for a brand new Bushmaster AR-15. Sticker price on it was $895. Feels great to move up to a real quality rifle. (had nothing but a cheap Norinko m-90 for the past few years)

185gr JHP from National Bullet
spare brass from the range
(secret formula)
1050fps-1080fps -- 450ft/lb
very low muzzle flash
2-3in 25yds accurate
$6.40/box

200gr SWC from Midway
spare brass from the range
(secret formula)
750-800fps
1-2in 25yds accurate
$4.00/box

Repeat after me: I will never buy that S&B garbage again for $10.00/box!

Just make sure you use factory Ruger magazines. You can still find them in hi-cap but they are pricey. I had a mini-14 that I bought used. It came with 5 20-round USA magazines. The gun jammed all the time so I sold it. Learned later it was those crappy magazines. I wish I still had that rifle. It was beautiful.

cheaperthandirt still has cases of Wolf .223, just seems to be out of one particular make, in case quantities. Plenty of other cheap brands.

They seem to have it at ammoman.com.....

Roger that. I just ordered some South African battle packs through ammoman, and they're well stocked and open for business.

I have a Glock .40 but have neve tried reloads in it. The cheapest I ever used was the generic Winchester ("USA") Someone warned me about Wolf ammo once...There is a place up around Sacto (I think) called "The Ammo Dump" that is always at guns shows. They might have some.
