I was wondering who this was from. It's from "ENS" which is the "Environment News Service"

From aboutENS on the Lycos web site:

Environment News Service

First, Fast, and Factual

The Environment News Service is the original daily international wire service of the environment. Established in 1990 by Editor-in-Chief Sunny Lewis and Managing Editor Jim Crabtree, it is independently owned and operated, and is not affiliated with any business, industry, government or environmental group.

The Environment News Service (ENS) exists to present late-breaking environmental news in a fair and balanced manner.

It lists as its accomplishments ENS dispatches from war zones. Environmental news from a war zone. Read that sentence again.

I forgot to add, the ENS article states that it was the US Forest Service that concluded that that US Forest Service did nothing wrong.

The salvation of most species came about from the cooperation of rural people with private individuals and groups such as Ducks Unlimited and the Elk Foundation. It was the rural ag producer who maintained water resources and kept the lands that brought wildlife back.

Hmm... I blew off the mailers from these two groups. Somehow, some environmental group has my mailing address and I've gotten mailers from the Nature Conservancy, and others. I've lumped Ducks Unlimited and Elk Foundation along with the same group. Time to go send some money to DU and EF.

I wish that there was a way to figure out who sold which groups my information.

I forgot to add, the ENS article states that it was the US Forest Service that concluded that that US Forest Service did nothing wrong.

The article says:

"The USFS and other experts have now determined that the biologists did not plant lynx hairs in the field"

Some alternative links below.

Lynx count a hair off? Fur flies over fake find

Excerpt: "An outside investigator hired by the agency in February concluded in June that three employees at the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in Southwest Washington were involved."

Biologist denies tainting survey

Excerpt: "Tom Kogut, a wildlife biologist in the Cowlitz Valley Ranger District of the Forest Service, said the lab and Forest Service officials were notified that hair from a captive animal had been sent to check the accuracy of the tests."

If that's true, then it's a pretty lousy attempt to defraud the survey.

And here's a pretty definitive statement on what was done wrong from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife:

Statement from Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Chief Scientists Regarding the Submittal of False Data for Interagency Lynx Study

Excerpt: "The mistake that these biologists made was not related to questioning the accuracy of the DNA analysis, but rather the way they went about testing the methodology. They chose to act unilaterally, without a specific scientific design, and without proper coordination with the science team in charge of the nationwide survey. They gave too little thought to how their submitted data might possibly be integrated into the real data of the survey, and how their actions might jeopardize the validity of the entire survey project, let alone all other data collection activities of the agency. The proper action by the biologists should have been to bring their concerns to their supervisors and to the science team in their program. The USFS Lynx Survey coordinator would then have been brought into the discussion. If their concerns were still warranted, a proper blind effects experimental design could have been put in place."

So, in essence, the employees took it upon themselves to test the lab's performance without notifying the higher-ups that they were doing so. So while they DID act against proper procedure, they did not plant false evidence. And the media reporting this story (and the congressmen pursuing it) have tried to give that impression.

It's a good idea to keep this bumped. It not only exposes the Fish and Game Dept, but the whole liberal cult of the environment.

Greatly appreciate those links- the article I have actually dates back to 1998 or 97, but those 2 carry on the theme Dr. Williams was hammering on.
