Ok, you have it right. I did get it backward. I was thinking that Edison pushed AC because of his light bulb.

Of course you can still buy DC lightbulbs - like for flashlights. The impetus for AC was the transformer, which allowed long transmission of high voltages with little loss. Then transformers reduced the voltage to usable levels at the home, etc..

I know all of this because I worked as an engineer for Mr. Westinghouse's company for 35 years.

Unfortunately, Mr. Edison's company - GE - has survived whereas Mr. Westinghouse's company has disappeared, due to massive mismanagement.
