Director Altman: 'Americans Are Full of It!'The director of such movie classics as "M.A.S.H." and "Nashville" doesn't think much of the country that made him rich and famous, especially in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Robert Altman, who's now in London making his next flick "Gosford Park,", is telling just about any British reporter who will listen how much he hates the U.S. - and especially President Bush.
"We've got a president who won the election because of accountants and money men," he said in a magazine interview previewed last week in London's Express newspaper.
"We've got a war going on to protect their oil interests," the celebrated moviemaker continued complaining. "Wherever you go in America there is nothing but flags. The Americans are so full of it."
The director continued his rant in the Times of London yesterday, bellyaching, "When I see an American flag flying, it's a joke,"
"This present government in America I just find disgusting, the idea that George Bush could run a baseball team successfully - he can't even speak! I just find him an embarrassment."
Altman's comments to the Times were picked up by the New York Post Tuesday, which also noted that Altman's anti-American feeling is so strong, he's thinking of moving to London for good.
"I'd be very happy to stay here. There's nothing in America that I would miss at all," the Bush-bashing movieman concluded.

"These people who say that this war is all about oil, were they in comas on September 11 or what?" See my other comments. These quotes cannot be current at all. Or, the guy is unbelievably senile. A'stan is NOT an oil-producing country.

If the people that hate America are shooting their mouths off then Bush is definately doing things right.

"This present government in America I just find disgusting, the idea that George Bush could run a baseball team successfully - he can't even speak! Back during the election, Altman promised that if Bush won, he'd move to France. We're still waiting for you to leave, Mr. Altman.
To: reegs
That should be "coherent sentance together?" It obviously isn't me! LOL! DAMMIT!

By Jove, you're right, Wright! I didn't notice the article states that Altman is right now MAKING the movie!

Years ago I watched an interview with the author of MASH. He said that he did not write the book with nearly the anti-war bias that appeared in the series. So it looks like Altman has been at this for a long time.

I thought there was a law against going on foreign soil and trashing our country and President. I guess if it is undeclared(so called) a farthead like Altman can say anything. Why don't we go through our respective film libraries, and have a public bonfire in protest of Altman?
To: truther
He directed M.A.S.H. for crying out loud. Everybody knows this guy hates America. This is a surprise?
To: truther
Why, Altman, if you find the US so contemptible, why continue to offend yourself by living here?
To: truther
From the looks of his nose, his liver may take him out soon.

Not defending Altman here, but these are obviously old comments reported as if they are current. (If he was filming Gosford Park these were certainly made pre-9/11. Although this would definitely put him in the Baldwin, Streisand etc. camp)

If this was a war about oil and not about having 4,000 of our citizens killed, then shouldn't we be developing our own oil reserves?? Shouldn't he be consistant and lobbying for drilling off the Calfornicated coast. Where was he on Bosnia??? All this patriotism is driving them crazy. Hollywacked is just a bunch of overpaid, nepotistic, Stalinist, drug addicted wierdos trying to be important! Every native Oregonian hates California and this is why!
Pray for GW and the Truth

"I am a political person," Altman says, "but I don't have to put a strong debate into a film. This present government in America I just find disgusting, the idea that George Bush could run a baseball team successfully -he can't even speak! I just find him an embarrassment. I was over here when the election was on and I couldn't believe it -and I'm 76 years old. Then when the Supreme Court came in and turned out to be a totally political animal, the last shred of any naivety that was left in me has gone. When I see an American flag flying, it's a joke." An enraged Altman suddenly checks himself, aware that he is on sensitive ground in our post-September 11 world. But, controversially, he thinks that Hollywood may have inspired the World Trade Centre attacks. "We gave them the ideas -it was a movie," he fumes. "We should be ashamed of ourselves."
Altman also disagrees with bombing Afghanistan, even though he flew B-24 bombers in the South Pacific during the Second World War. "I don't think there was a moral choice then," he argues. "But this thing we're involved in now - these people don't even have a country, and maybe that's the problem."
from The Times (London) January 21, 2002, Monday
Now apologize to everyone on this thread for presenting false information.

HELLO! Was this idiot asleep on 9-11 and anytime since? Sounds like dementia is setting in with this old man. What we are full of Mr. Altman is pride of our country and president, as well as a valid desire to defend this great country and it's people including dorks like you! So, yes, sir, I am full of it!

That's the truth - I read the book years ago and was struck by its liberal-bashing. The movie has always been one of my faves until I watched it again recently. I had forgotten all the Christian-bashing directed at Major Burns. Needless to say, no longer one of my faves.

I think this man needs some serious freeping.
