Duly noted and a decent article. However, the correctly translated phrase, from 1 Timothy 6:10, is "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil...." Quite a different meaning, though not as controversial a phrase.

One of my favorite passages from a totally awesome book. Thanks for posting it - might be time to pull that one off the bookshelf again. :)

Radix malorum est cupiditas. The love of money is the root of all evil. That at least is the saying.

Money is one of the many mediums for power. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Money by itself, it no more dangerous than a gun by itself. It is who has money and in what way that person can be use money is when it can be dangerous.

Thanks for all the work you went to. This,IMO,is the best passage in Atlas Shrugged, and one of the best that Rand ever wrote. I'm not a huge fan of the lady, but she outdid herself with this one.

Money is:

1) A medium of exchange. That is, it can be exchanged for other things of value. Money takes many forms. I can be paper of a certain size printed with a particular design, a large stone on Easter island, or a coin of a particular size and weight of a particular element. It doesn't matter as long as the buyer and seller agree on the value of the money.

2) A store of value. That is, if you trade something for money, the money acts a store for the value of that which it was traded for. If you trade sheep (or anything else) for money, theoretically, it could be traded back for the same number of sheep at a later time, all other things being equal.

3) A means of accounting. Money provides a fungible (equally divisible into very small units) means of keeping track of economic activity. Try entering half a sheep onto an expense report for entertaining clients.

THESE ARE THE ONLY PROPERTIES OF MONEY. Everything else is derived from these. Money is a THING. It is neither good, nor bad. It is a tool just as a screwdriver, a knife, or a gun is a tool. The only thing that may be considered good, or bad, is the use the tool is put to. In and of itself, it is no different from Playdoh or Playboy.

The lovers of money are willing to work for it. They know that are able to deserve it."

Lovers of money are nothing more than slaves of their god. (By the way, that god is named Mammon.)

It's the person who would sell his soul for a nickle, who is loudest in proclaiming his hatred of money - and he has good reason to hate it.

She must be talking about Morgan and Carnegie (sp?), googooplexing the "nickle" part of course. The coal miners can still spit Morgan with soot in any language. Long live the unions; corrupt as they are, they're nothing but a balancing force.

Leave it to godless Ayn Rand to not even get her criticism correct. It is the LOVE of money that is the rooot of all evil. Coming from one of the forerunners of the material girl gang, I'm not surprised she is so blind. Her love of money was part of her downfall as well as being a staunch atheist.

Geesh, are people so dumb or even stupid not to see through her godless and illogical rantings? Don't answer. It's obvious many don't.

Neither money nor the love of money are the root of all evil. Harry Potter is the root of all evil.

I'll go you one further in your story of money; money does not exist in nature! Money is an invention by humans, and exists only with their group agreement. If you don't agree I can show you a trunk full of confederate bills that are good for value as recyclable paper only [although you may get more at antique shows]. Also various south american currencies change value hourly, and are so bad that people all want to be paid in US Dollars. The US Dollar is the most respected money because it has the widest agreement in its value and stability.

You can all get very significant and philosophical about it, but it is simply a group agreement that holds it together.

But money is only a tool.
Right On!!

Reminds me of something I heard recently. A hammer in the hand of an evil person can maim and kill. Yet a hammer can also build homes for the needy. An automobile, driven by an evil person can destroy and maim. Yet an auto can also transport the elderly to social functions. Money, in the hands of evil people can do evil things. Money in the hands of good people can do good things.

Indeed, it is JUST a tool.
