FBI Investigates Local Ties To Al-Qaida

As investigators try to shut off the flow of money to al-Qaida, they're looking closely at a bank branch inside an Albertson's store in Clackamas.

The tiny strip-mall bank is the focus of an inquiry by the FBI, the state department, and the Russian government.

A Seattle newspaper reports that a radical faction from Chechnya is collecting donations for al-Qaida through an account at the US Bank branch at Sunnyside Square.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer quotes sources as saying that the Russians have repeatedly asked United States officials to shut down the account without success.

The owner of the account lists an address in West Linn, but police think he's not in the area anymore.

So, why is the Oregonian AWOL on this story? It's happening in their own back yard. The sad thing is, it's not surprising.

As far as shutting off the money. Here is my 2 cents. Even though the russians say that the account is being used by Al-queda, it is important to be able to prove beyond all reasonability that it is indeed used for such nefarious ends. Should this burden of evidence be relaxed, you might start see every citizen who becomes irritating to any public official have their assets confiscated. Since forfeiture places the burden of proof on the party with their assets confiscated, it is indeed a dangerous tool of coercion that politicans and beuracrats could abuse easily. As much as I dislike terrorist, I am more concerned about the rights of americans. "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." There is a difference between not investigating and over investigating. Clintonistas refused to investigate.

Benjamin Franklin would be the first to applaud the application of laws against this terrorist front.

Mindless repetition of this quote every time the government attempts to move against those at war with us merely indicates lack of depth in thought at best.
