I wonder: when asbestos was banned, why didn't the builders go back to using concrete? Anybody know?
To: KirklandJunction
Profit motive. It was cheaper.
It's silly to try to blame all this on liberals. They were doing the best they could to protect lives and prevent disease, given the available data and the scientific understanding of the time.

...when asbestos was banned, why didn't the builders go back to using concrete?Pure speculation, but perhaps concrete insulation couldn't be used on WTC because of the height of the buildings, i.e. the concrete would have added too much weight and destabilized the building.

I suggest you visit junkscience.com for commentary and articles that repudiate your stance.

The available scientific literature has always indicated that non-friable asbestos is not carcinogenic, and that friable asbestos is only so in huge quantities - like those working unprotected in an asbestos factory. The liberals always knew this, and consistently blew the danger of asbestos out of proportion.

The cause of the quick collapse of the twin towers and resulting loss of life was suppressed by the media out of sympathy and fear of the enviros. B.S. - -
This site blows away this knucklehead's entire thesis.
He'l have to raise money using other lies from now on, I guess.

The data about asbestos and cancer has never been perfectly clear. It was less clear thirty years ago than it is today.
Asbestos certainly has never been proven to be safe. There has been data to suggest a statistcal link, and a plausible mechanism.
Lately, these results have come under scrutiny, but that doesn't change the fact that thrity years ago, it seemed like a good idea.

Concrete is too rigid for a very tall building. Needs to be flexible to flex in the wind.

Another tragedy was the Challenger shuttle crash. A NOAA veteran said that the cause was the removal of asbestos rinforcing and insulating fibers from the o-ring sealants. The new sealants had experienced marginal problems on earlier flights but not with ice handing on at launch time.

Looks like the enviro-wackos have invaded this forum.
The "asbestos threat" is on the same par with alar, radon, global warming and the ozone hole. Next we'll be hearing about how real those are too.
I have no doubt that if the WTC was insulated with asbestos, more people would have gotten out alive.

Before WWII and being drafted intot the Navy, my father was an electrician at the Brooklyn Navy Yard (worked on some of the most famous ships of that era). He was knee deep in asbestos every day. Today he is 75 and healthier than I am.

Bull$%^&!!! The project had been budgeted to USE the Asbestos/Mineral wool...it was the chicken-little lobby that stopped the use.
This can be laid at the doorstep of the LIBERAL enviroMENTALists!
It is a fact that Asbestos fibers are carcinogenic...but it is the REMOVAL of Asbestos insulation that generates the MOST fiber and dust! Not it's application.
Isn't it funny that the planes struck the buildings above the point where the column insulation stopped? Almost like they KNEW where to hit, now isn't it?
