USO Canteen Freeper Style
War has come to our shores. It was committed on American soil. We have been able to live in Freedom only because of those who have fought in the past wars giving life, limb and all the sacrifices for us to live in Freedom and go about our day without fear.
On September 11, 2001, that comfort, that feeling of living in a land that would not be attacked ended.
William T. Sherman said it succinctly, "War is hell."
The day has come for this Nation and its people to understand that there is a risk in losing its freedom, and in reality there always has been. We have ONLY stayed free because of the sacrifices of our military, our warriors.
This is about saving the future of America. Aristotle said, "We make war that we may live in peace."
We are seeing the American Flag flying at homes now more than ever in my lifetime. We are seeing the American Flag flying on vehicles and people wearing Flag pins and small Flags on their clothes. America is united in the cause for Freedom and for our country to WIN against the evil that came upon our land to kill and hurt us. To change our way of life and to destroy America which is US, you and me. To take away our precious Freedom.
This is the Freeper version of the USO Canteen. Where soldiers could come and feel a small part of being at home. It is a place where you that have family in the military can post a thought to a loved one that might be able to read it far away from home. A place where we that support our military can help support them, post to them, fun graphics showing the price in America and our troops. Poems, quotes, cartoons, or articles of how America is behind our troops.
Those in our military are our Nation's warriors. Let us join hands, fly our Flag and let the world know how important our warriors are to us....And that our MILITARY, our Warriors, are America's TRUE HEROS!
"No Marine was ever honored for what they received. Honor was the reward for what they gave." (Anonymous) CHIEF gave his all in many ways. He touched our lives and his friendship meant so much to all of us. He will live in our hearts forever, and his friendship will always be a bright and shining memory in our hearts and souls.

"Great graphic, Tonk!"
Credit goes to river rat, he posted it on another thread yesterday.
I really liked it and thought my Marine FRiends would like it on the USO Canteen today.
God Bless the Marines

Oh, Daisy! Thanks so much for that picture and the information. I'm glad to see it posted here, and I'm also going to save it to my server and post it on the Veteran's thread tomorrow. I've finished the thread itself, but will add this as one of the very first posts. It needs to be there. :^)

About the Golden Corral Tribute - what a delightful find, Tonkin!
It will be worth the 35-mile drive to Aiken to take advantage of this.
By the way, I'm glad you and COB1 and I are together on the same line of photographs!
(((hugs))) to you, reaching across the row...:)))

It was lacking a pretty lady until I remembered your wife, even though you didn't send a "new" photo of her. I appreciate the information you gave me about her, which made it seem right to add her there - as well as dressing up the photo! :^)

She wouldn't scan an old AF one. :) You're right; she DEFINITELY belongs there; left the AF as a Staff Sergeant, and was the best air traffic controller I ever saw, period.

68-69TonkinGulfYatchClub asked me to post that picture of the troops on the USS Roosevelt so I will share your thanks with him.
I can't wait for tomorrow's thread. Will it be posted at midnight tonight?
We need lots of cakes today to celebrate. Here is a nice three tiered one. And it is chocolate. I will try to make a white one too as some people have told me (and this is so....hard to believe) do not care for chocolate!!!

"as some people have told me (and this is so....hard to believe) do not care for chocolate!!!"
"Either you are with chocolate or you are against chocolate!"
LOL

I love cooking in cyberspace.
Here is a strawberry filled poundcake for those "who are against chocolate". Now is everyone happy?

This thread has me in tears. My father, gone 11 years now, loved his beloved corps. He "dispatched" a few of Billy Clinton's PRC buddies in the Korean War, and used to celebrate today every year. Wrote his senior thesis for his BA at Princeton on the history of the corps right before he reported to Quantico. Used to wear a t-shirt with the likeness of Smedley D. Butler on it, hoping people would ask him who the man was so he could tell his story. So here's to the USMC...Semper Fi.
BTW, one of my prized possessions he had was an autographed copy of Jim Berryman's famous editorial cartoon of the Iwo Jima flag-raising carrying Truman's apology for slighting the Corps. I look forward to the picture of them raising the flag in Baghdad someday...

Good job, Keith, and thanks for sharing your story.
Stay a while, you're among friends and patriots just trying to get through this mess together while supporting our military. JL

The Few, The Proud, The Marines....sure sums it up.
I hope your dad had a long and happy life. The Clinton years would have been very hard on him, I am sure.
My favorite Marine story: A cousin was in VietNam, in the Army, in Saigon and he told me that his unit (a photo unit) had instructions to "call the Marines" in case of enemy trouble. Well, one day they got into a situation and did as were instructed, called the Marines and 5 or so were killed or injured taking care of their enemy problem. He still weeps when he tells the story. Marines actually died for him. He was a college graduate reluctant draftee and at least one young man died saving him. Needless to say, his anti-military stance changed in a hurry and he ended up re-enlisting after his 2 year hitch was done.
Be sure and look for Billie's thread tomorrow, in honor of Veterans Day. It will be very special, you can count on it.
Too bad you did not visit here sooner. You could have sent your Dad's photo in to Billie. It is probably too late for this year but why not send her a copy of your Dad's picture and she can maybe use it in the future.

As much as I love chocolate and as beautiful as that one is, your second one looks best to me!
