Stunning news.

Is this for real?
If Israel found a terrorist with any form of atomic weapon, surely we would have seen a massive retaliation?
On the other hand, if this is for real, then this kicks the possibility of a radiological attack against the US from 'possible' to 'probable', maybe even inevitable.

Is there anyone here who does not believe that the threat of a nuclear strike from Bin laden is no longer a matter of if, but when and where?

IMHO, this will be our third wave here in America. Radiological Hot Zones: coming soon to a symbol of capitalism near you.
God help us.

>Did a search, didn't see it posted.Hey, I wonder if WND is getting their stories from FR!
Not only was this posted over a week ago, but it was discussed in great detail, and then the source was tracked down and posted by Freeper spycatcher.
The other thread is here: Israelis Capture Man With Radiological Backpack Bomb

FR Axiom 23: Every old story has been posted at Free Republic at least once whether you can find it in a search or not. ;-)
This was a frightening story when first posted and it is still frightening today.
I could write ten pages outlining all the implications of this story but the thread covered many and the rest you should be bright enough to figure out for yourself.

So once more we will have so called experts telling us that it is impossible for those who are engaged in a Jihad against us to have these weapons. when one goes off in the USA they will blame some Right Eing Group as they are now with the Anthrax attacks.
I guess we better get used to the Liberals who want to go after their enemies instead of the enemies of America.

What I want to know is why the h*** isn't this all over the major news networks?
To: Lurker
I've seen this one story posted over and over again, and I don't think it's credible. Sale has a history of bad reporting. See
this link for a good example.

This is exactly why we should NOT start talking about NOT using tactical nuclear battlefield weapons, chemical agents, biological warfare, or "illegal" weapons. Mass murdering terrorists that will stop at NOTHING to kill as many of us as they can, should have EVERYTHING in our arsenal and then some thrown at them if need be. The only way to stop the terrorism is to kill the terrorist, period. After all, by setting a standard of no standards or limits, the terrorist has determined the nature and aspect of the warfare he will face, and we would be fools to respond otherwise. Let the terrorist know exactly what his actions have wrought and the price he will pay for it.

How do you get to the Palestinian Territories from Pakistan or Afghanistan with a nuclear device without being spotted at customs? What was this guy's route?

They caught one; I wonder how many others they didn't catch...

"There is such a complicated sequence you have to perform that some terrorist isn't going to be able to get it to work. You have to be very highly trained"
Two months ago you could have said the same thing regarding the piloting of an large jet airplane.

Israeli security last month arrested a man linked to suspected terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden armed with a radiological backpack bomb, as he attempted to enter Israel from the Palestinian Territories via a border checkpoint at Ramallah, according to U.S. government officials. The arrest took place during the last week of September, according to one knowledgeable official who spoke on condition of anonymity. He declined to give the exact date of arrest. Two other sources interviewed by UPI confirmed the incident, but also declined to give further details.
"People know how to walk a dog back," one said, meaning that relating too exact an account could lead to the identification of the source of the information.
Regarding the arrest, a U.S. government official said: "There was only one individual involved. He was from Pakistan."

Did a search, didn't see it posted. There was something similar posted earlier, but it was from an obscure source, and was not as detailed.
Also, it referred to a more recent incident, not this one from September.

"Israeli security last month arrested a man linked to suspected terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden armed with a radiological backpack bomb" This is the first I've heard of any major nuclear power having a radiological bomb. Everything I've seen published to date has said that such "dirty bombs" were the exclusive province of third world countries, terrorist organizations, and "lone wolf" terrorists. In other words, the threat of radiological bombs was soley from those who did not have the ability to create a fission weapon.
Now, I am weighing the years of news that said the above on the one hand, against this one report of a Russian-built radiological bomb on the other hand, and it's coming up short.
So, if I look at the current report, I can see a small number of possibilities:
1. The story is as-related; it's true; the Russians created radiological bombs, and no one knew about them, and now, at least one has gotten into the hands of a terrorist.
2. The story has been changed to protect someone, most likely a source -- the bomb is as-described, but it is not from the Russians.
3. The story has been changed, for the purpose of messing with the enemy. IOW, it's agitprop. Either nothing of the sort happened, or the person was caught with something other than what he was described has having.
4. The story has been changed, in order to protect the tender sensibilities of the West, and in order to "maintain the balance of [insert factor here]" -- the person was captured with a Russian backpack fusion bomb, of the type that has been alluded to in the media for several years.
IMO, #1 is the least likely, and #4 is the most likely. #2 & #3 are tossups, but of less probability than #4, and greater probability than #1.
Two cents, do with them as you like.

This article is fake. It was picked up by WND from a non-UPI site, then (when corroboration was not forthcoming) it was withdrawn by WND. A thorough check of UPI archives and Lexis/Nexis reveals no such article. Searches of cached web pages via Google show no record of publication by UPI, or by any other legitimate source-- just a few alternative sites, and WND for that brief moment before it was withdrawn.
As plausible as it sounds, this report is bogus.

Did a search, didn't see it posted. There was a similar story a few weeks ago, but the source was questionable. This story seems to have more validity. Such a device would make a mess of the locality due to radiocontamination. The cleanup effort would be similar to a large oil or chemical spill, but all unprotected personnel would have to be evacuated for the duration. Shopowners, residents, pets. Gardens would have to be destroyed, bagged, and carted off, as would all exposed dirt, including unpaved roadways. All surfaces either cleaned like never before, or removed altogether.
