Then G&G got it wrong? The dialogue, in my memory at least, made him out to be a slave -- I assumed Jackson's slave, until Tax-Chick pointed out the invoice amount.

Wouldn't Lewis have been paid in much smaller increments, if he'd been a hired hand -- presumably weekly?

According to Farwell's biography of Jackson, Jim Lewis was a free man from the Lexington area. He most certainly would have been paid a salary, either by Jackson or the confederate army.

Then G&G got it wrong?

Look, folks. 'Gods and Generals' was a movie, based on a work of fiction. It did not come from a burning bush in someones backyard. Why the idea that there might have been some sort of creative license in the dialog hasn't sunk in is amazing to me.
