Here's hoping for a big holiday weekend for birders - and their suppliers.

Thanks, we're hoping for it too. The weather is perfect so we've two good days before the end of the month to make progress.

Beautiful day here too. Sunshine and 70's. Just the way I like it!

If we would have stopped at the 70's, it would have been perfect.

I would take your extra degrees over 70 today if you don't mind. I'm chilly and having to wear a sweat shirt and jeans.

Momma duck in front of the store hatched her eggs today, so far we can only see 2 yellow fuzzballs out of the 13 egss, but she's in dense undergrowth so it's hard to see if any more hatched.

We figure tomorrow morning she'll take the ducklings to the pond. Looks like we'll be in real early tomorrow in case they need any help getting over the curbs in the parking lot. :-)

I've got the digital camera ready and we'll be at our post very early tomorrow morning expecting her to move the chicks to the pond around sunrise! This parking lot is so busy out here we were hoping she would wait until a weekend.

Well, hopefully, you, Sam and the ducks will be the only ones in the parking lot at that time!

The shell and balls seemed all round us, and yet few seemed to fall. We kept up this heavy firing for some time, when the enemy came out of the woods in front and made a grand attack on the battery. They were met by grape and canister and a tremendous fire of the Infantry. They faltered and fell back.

Stand of grapeshot

CSA 1" canister Knoxville, TN

Grapeshot produced devastating wounds to limbs, usually treated quickly and efficiently with amputation.

Afternoon Phil Dragoo.

I can't imagine men marching into the face of canister and grape in a straight line.

Hubert Humphrey
Among his many accomplishments he founded the Minnesota Democrat Farmer Labor party. Before Humphrey (or as we call him here the Hummper) came on the scene Mn. was a pretty solid Republican state.
(note I didn't say this was a good thing, just that he's the one responcible for Mn.'s rep as a liberal state.
He first made as big splash at the 48 democrat convention when he made a speech about civil rights, the southern democrats got a darn near terminal case of the vapors over that, and lead to the founding of the dixiecrat party.
