Something I read a long time ago about this kind of thing, to the effect that we have to look at what happened to these big bad outlas when they rode into a town to rob the bank. They got the crap blown out of them. Why? Look at who lived in these towns..civil war veterans for the most part and the survivors at that! Which meant they were the type to cower at the sight of someone with a gun or someone shooting at them. Another example would be the Northfield Mn. raid by the James/Younger gang, it was easy for them to get up here..getting out...that was an entirely different kettle of fish.
Interesting side note was Cole Younger after he got out of Stillwater prison ended up as a traveling Methodist minister.
