For those of you, like me, who do not live in or near any of the above cities, here is a golden opportunity to take a closer look at the collection. It includes the papal chair (last used by Pope John Paul I) and those feather things (sorry, I forgot the proper word). Enjoy!

Papal Tiara of Pope Pius IX

It was made for him by Napoleon to wear to his coronation. Napoleon intentionally had it made too small for the pope's head so that when Napoleon was crowned, only he would be wearing a crown. As a double slap, the tiara was encrusted with jewels stolen from the Vatican. LOL!

Mandylion of Edessa

Historians have long known about an ancient cloth bearing an image of Jesus. This cloth was known as the Image of Edessa, the Edessa Cloth, and later in the Byzantine era as the Holy Mandylion. Edessa was a cosmopolitan city in Jesus’ day and one of the cities were Christian communities developed early as they did in Antioch. Edessa, now the city of Urfa in modern day Turkey, is situated about 400 miles north of Jerusalem. We can be quite certain that this ancient cloth, which disappeared during the sacking of Constantinople in 1204 by soldiers of the Fourth Crusade, is the Shroud of Turin.

Legend has it that the cloth was brought to King Abgar V Ouchama of Edessa (13 –50 CE) by one of Jesus’ disciples known to us as Thaddeus Jude (Addai). We know of this legend from Eusebius of Caesarea’s early fourth century Ecclesiastical History. Therein, we learn of a now lost document once in Edessa’s archives purportedly written by King Abgar V and delivered to Jesus by an envoy named Ananias. Abgar, supposedly, asked Jesus to come to Edessa and to cure him of leprosy. Eusebius’ history reports that the Apostle Thomas did send Thaddeus Jude sometime after Jesus’ death and that he founded a church in Edessa. Historians are highly critical of this legend since Eusebius’s history includes, as elements of the letter, references from the Gospels, which were written later, as well as theological concepts, which were developed later. It also must be pointed out that Eusebius makes no mention of the cloth.

those feather things (sorry, I forgot the proper word).

Boas? Oh, wait; we're not talking about American bishops. Never mind.

Seriously, though. I saw this exhibit last month. It's all about the history of the papacy and the petrine office, with a strong emphasis on the last 150 years or so. Interesting and extensive, but the experience is more educational than aesthetic. Go for the artifacts; don't expect to see great art.

I'm not sure that this 'legacy' is even legitimate. I mean, when we read Acts, it is clear that James is the one in authority, and it is James who gives the final directive.

Eusebius:  Ecclesiastical History
http://biblefacts.org/ecf/cvol1/euseb_b2.html

Book  II

CHAPTER I.

The Course pursued by the Apostles after the Ascension of Christ. First, then, in the place of Judas, the betrayer, Matthias, who, as has been shown was also one of the Seventy, was chosen to the apostolate. And there were appointed to the diaconate, for the service of the congregation, by prayer and the laying on of the hands of the apostles, approved men, seven in number, of whom Stephen was one. He first, after the Lord, was stoned to death at the time of his ordination by the slayers of the Lord, as if he had been promoted for this very purpose. And thus he was the first to receive the crown, corresponding to his name, which belongs to the martyrs of Christ. Then James, whom the ancients surnamed the Just on account of the excellence of his virtue, is recorded to have been the first to be made bishop of the church of Jerusalem. This James was called the brother of the Lord because he was known as a son of Joseph, and Joseph was supposed to be the father of Christ, because the Virgin, being betrothed to him, "was found with child by the Holy Ghost before they came together," as the account of the holy Gospels shows. But Clement in the sixth book of his Hypotyposes writes thus: "For they say that Peter and James and John after the ascension of our Savior, as if also preferred by our Lord, strove not after honor, but chose James the Just bishop of Jerusalem."

James was the successor of Jesus.  James was the Leader of the Jerusalem Community (Assembly) and of the Church as a whole.  James was the Head of Christianity of his day, whatever this may have been said to be.  Bishop of Jerusalem is not simply one among equals, but the leader.  This is why Peter left the table at Antioch.  If Peter had been 'in charge', why feel guilty about breaking table fellowship with gentiles?  Answer, because James was in charge and Head of the Church

Acts15
13   And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me:
14   Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.
15   And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,
16   After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up:
17   That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things.
18   Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.
19   Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God:
20   But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.

21   For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.

And this directive is repeated in Acts 15:28-29

Acts 15
28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;
29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

Keep in mind that this all takes place AFTER the crucifixtion! After the crucifixtion the Holy Spirit deemed these things necessary!!

The RCC claims Peter as the first pope in 32AD. As I pointed out above, James is the clear leader, not Peter. While James ministered to the Jews and Paul ministered to the Gentiles, they are supposed to be preaching the same gospel. This means that Jews/ and those Gentiles that wished to be grafted unto Israel, should have wound up in the same place, the same belief system as what Jesus and his apostles had. Yet there is a world of difference between them.

For instance The apostles, including Paul observed the Sabbath, even AFTER the crucifixtion. You can see this in Acts.

Acts 13:14
But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down.

Acts 13:42
And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.

Acts 13:44
And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.

Acts 17:2
And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

Acts 18:4
And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.

Acts 21
20   And when they heard it, they glorified the Lord, and said unto him, Thou seest, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are which believe; and they are all zealous of the law:

2207 zelotes dzay-lo-tace' from 2206; a "zealot":--zealous.
1) one burning with zeal, a zealot
2) used of God as jealous of any rival and sternly vindicating
his control
3) most eagerly desirous of, zealous for, a thing
a) to acquire a thing, (zealous of)
b)
to defend and uphold a thing, vehemently contending for a thing

Acts 21:20 informs us that James, the head of the church of Jesus in the first century, would state (approximately 60 A.D.-notice it was about thirty years since his brother's death on the cross): "Thou seest, brother (Paul), how many thousands of Jews there are which believe (in Jesus the Messiah of Israel); AND THEY ARE ALL ZEALOUS FOR THE LAW."

The LAW HAD NOT PASSED AWAY FOR THE CHURCH BEARING JESUS' NAME IN THE FIRST CENTURY Those Christians of the first century that accepted Jesus as Messiah were actually a sect within Judaism. They still followed the Law and the Prophets and kept the Sabbath.

The 'church' that claims Peter as its first pope (RCC), doesn't resemble Judaism at all, so how can its followers even think that they have been grafted unto the God of Israel, when this same RCC church through Constantine changed God's 4th commandment pertaining to keeping the Sabbath, and changed the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday???

Does the 'christian' church teach these 'necessary things':

Acts 15
28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;
29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

like the Jewish Christian church and followers did?

John 4:22
Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

Did you catch that? Salvation is of the Jews. NOT WAS, IS.

2 Corinthians 5
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

What did Paul mean by 'new creature'?

2937 ktisis ktis'-is from the root 2936; original formation (properly, the act; by implication, the thing, literally or figuratively):--building, creation, creature, ordinance.
1) the act of founding, establishing, building etc
a) the act of creating, creation
b) creation i.e. thing created
1) of individual things, beings, a creature, a creation
a) anything created
b) after a rabbinical usage (by which a man converted
from idolatry to Judaism was called)

c) the sum or aggregate of things created
c) institution, ordinance

2936 ktizo ktid'-zo probably akin to 2932 (through the idea of proprietorship of the manufacturer); to fabricate, i.e. found (form originally):--create, Creator, make.
1) to make habitable, to people, a place, region, island
a) to found a city, colony, state
2) to create
a) of God creating the worlds
b) to form, shape, i.e. to completely change or transform

Converting from idolatry to Judaism, showing God's proprietorship over us his creations.

When the Apostle Paul instructs Gentiles in Corinth to come to God through Jesus he intends them to become "new creatures" by leaving their idolatry and convert to Judaism and not Catholic or Protestant Christianity as we know it today.

Do so called 'christian' churches today resemble Judaism? Nope, not by a long shot! So, why did the christian churches of today vear off the path and form their own religion? Wasn't the Jewish religion that Jesus followed and taught others to follow, even after the crucifixtion, good enough for them?

backsliding from the Hebrew
4878 mshuwbah mesh-oo-baw' or mshubah {mesh-oo-baw'}; from 7725; apostasy:--backsliding, turning away.
1) turning away, turning back, apostasy, backsliding

2 Thessalonians 2
3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

646 apostasia ap-os-tas-ee'-ah feminine of the same as 647; defection from truth (properly, the state) ("apostasy"):--falling away, forsake.
1) a falling away, defection, apostasy

2 Thessalonians 2
3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

Could this mean someone may try to usurp God's authority? Like maybe trying to changes God's 4th commandment, or change Passover into Ishtar/Astarte/Easter, or adopt another pagan holy day, Dec 25th, the birthday of Mithra the sun-god??

7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

iniquity from the Greek
458 anomia an-om-ee'-ah from 459; illegality, i.e. violation of law or (genitive case) wickedness:--iniquity, X transgress(-ion of) the law, unrighteousness.
1) the condition of without law
a) because ignorant of it
b) because of violating it
2) contempt and violation of law, iniquity, wickedness

Jesus made the following prediction:

Matthew 24:11 - And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
12 - And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

Basically, Jesus predicted, that because of false prophets, illegality or violation of the law and a condition of without law will abound. Looks like he was right on target.

Revelation 2:9
I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.

Daniel 7
23 Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.
25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

The Gregorian calendar (pope Gregory) changed times and seasons, and Constanine changed the 4th commandment (law).

Legacy indeed.....

Can someone explain what this is doing in the exhibit?

If the pope can kiss the Koran, why not embrace Buddha too? Constantine did it, by embracing the sun-god and legalizing 'christianity'. Though he didn't convert to christianity, until he was on his death bed. I think its called 'hedging one's bets'.

I'm not sure that this 'legacy' is even legitimate. I mean, when we read Acts, it is clear that James is the one in authority, and it is James who gives the final directive.

Your scriptural quotes are intended to lend credence to your misunderstanding of James' position amongst the apostles. For one who conveys a good understanding of the bible, you have neglected to include the key scriptural quotes. An unintentional omission, perhaps?

"And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, [even] unto the end of the world. Amen." - Matthew 28:18-20

"When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some [say that thou art] John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed [it] unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ." - Matthew 16:13-20

"Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, [that] shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew [it] unto you." - John 16:13-14

"So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, [son] of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. He saith to him again the second time, Simon, [son] of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Simon, [son] of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep." - John 21:15-17

"Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." - Matthew 18:18

"Hence He said to Peter before His Ascension, 'Feed my sheep' (John xxi, 1) and before His Passion, 'Thou in thy turn confirm thy brethren' (Luke xxii, 32); and to him alone He made the promise, 'To thee I will give the keys of the kingdom of heaven' (Matt. xvi, 19). Nor can it be said that although He gave this dignity to Peter, it does not pass from Peter to others. For Christ instituted His Church to last to the end of the world, according to the text: 'He shall sit upon the throne of David and in his kingdom, to confirm and strengthen it in justice and judgement from henceforth, now, and for ever' (Isai. ix, 7). Therefore, in constituting His ministers for the time, He intended their power to pass to posterity for the benefit of His Church to the end of the world, as He Himself says: 'Lo, I am with you to the end of the world' (Matt. xxviii, 20). Hereby is cast out the presumptuous error of some, who endeavour to withdraw themselves from obedience and subjection to Peter, not recognising his successor, the Roman Pontiff, for the pastor of the Universal Church." - St. Thomas Aquinas ("Summa Contra Gentiles" 13th century A.D.)

Throughout the Acts of the Apostles, St. Peter is clearly the leader of the Christian community (Acts 1:15, 5:1-10).  And again, he is listed first among the Apostles in the New Testament (Matthew 10:2; Mark 3:16-19; Luke 6:13-14).  Before St. Peter was crucified, he appointed St. Linus as his successor. Why should this practice not be carried on to the present day? There is an unbroken line of Popes from St. Peter down to the present-day Pope. The Papacy is the oldest institution in the Western World. How could it have survived 2000 years without the grace of God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit?

St. Hegessipus in the 2nd century of the Church had already compiled a list of the popes, listing the current one at the time (Pope Anacletus) as the eleventh successor to St. Peter.

Yes, let's look at these verses from AFTER the crucifixtion, closely.

Matthew 28
18   And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19   Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20   Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

commanded
from the Greek
1781 entellomai en-tel'-lom-ahee from 1722 and the base of 5056; to enjoin:--(give) charge, (give) command(-ments), injoin.
1) to order, command to be done, enjoin

Go ye
from the Greek
4198 poreuomai por-yoo'-om-ahee middle voice from a derivative of the same as 3984; to traverse, i.e. travel (literally or figuratively; especially to remove (figuratively, die), live, etc.); --depart, go (away, forth, one's way, up), (make a, take a) journey, walk.
1)
to lead over, carry over, transfer
a) to pursue the journey on which one has entered, to continue on one's journey

b)

to follow one, that is: become his adherent
1) to lead or order one's life

teach
from the Greek
3100
matheteuo math-ayt-yoo'-o from 3101; intransitively, to become a pupil; transitively, to disciple, i.e. enrol as scholar:--be disciple, instruct, teach.
1) to be a disciple of one
a) to follow his precepts and instructions
2) to make a disciple
a) to teach, instruct

nations
from the Greek
1484 ethnos eth'-nos probably from 1486; a race (as of the same habit), i.e. a tribe; specially, a foreign (non-Jewish) one (usually, by implication, pagan):--Gentile, heathen, nation, people.

a)
the human family
3)
a tribe, nation, people group
4) in the OT, foreign nations not worshipping the true God, pagans, Gentiles

5) Paul uses the term for Gentile Christians

Notice that it is pagans and Gentiles that are to be taught.  The Jews already know the doctrines,
precepts and commandments which apply to them.  The Jews were/are to be a 'light unto the nations'.

teaching
from the Greek
1321 didasko did-as'-ko a prolonged (causative) form of a primary verb dao (to learn); to teach (in the same broad application):--teach.
1) to teach
  a) to hold discourse with others in order to instruct them, deliver didactic discourses
  b) to be a teacher
  c) to discharge the office of a teacher, conduct one's self as a teacher
2) to teach one
  a) to impart instruction
  b) instill doctrine into one
  c) the thing taught or enjoined
  d) to explain or expound a thing
  f)
to teach one something

Jesus' disciples and Apostles were to teach all Gentiles in all nations to observe  the doctrines and precepts as commanded by Jesus, which was verified to the Jerusalem Council by the Holy Spirit

Acts 15
28   For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; 29   That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

Acts 15 occured about 30 years AFTER the crucifixtion.

observe
from the Greek
5083
tereo tay-reh'-o from teros (a watch; perhaps akin to 2334); to guard (from loss or injury, properly, by keeping the eye upon; and thus differing from 5442, which is properly to prevent escaping; and from 2892, which implies a fortress or full military lines of apparatus), i.e. to note (a prophecy; figuratively, to fulfil a command); by implication, to detain (in custody; figuratively, to maintain); by extension, to withhold (for personal ends; figuratively, to keep unmarried); by extension, to withhold (for personal ends; figuratively, to keep unmarried):--hold fast, keep(- er), (pre-, re-)serve, watch.
1) to attend to carefully, take care of
a) to guard
b) metaph. to keep, one in the state in which he is
c) to observe
d)
to reserve: to undergo something

John 14
23   Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
24   He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.

Jesus intended the Gentiles of the world  learn "Apostolic doctrines" as it existed then and which the early church "steadfastly continued in according to Acts 2:42", or was he referring to Greek Catholic doctrines, Reformation doctrines, or Protestant doctrines which would be created much later? That shouldn't be hard to figure out.

Acts 2
42   And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

Remember that Hegesippus records that the Law and Prophets were taught until all the Apostles died off.:

... Up to that period the Church had remained like a virgin pure and uncorrupted: for, if there were any persons who were disposed to tamper with the wholesome rule of the preaching of salvation,11 they still lurked in some dark place of concealment or other. But, when the sacred band of apostles had in various ways closed their lives, and that generation of men to whom it had been vouchsafed to listen to the Godlike Wisdom with their own ears had passed away, then did the confederacy of godless error take its rise through the treachery of false teachers, who, seeing that none of the apostles any longer survived, at length attempted with bare and uplifted head to oppose the preaching of the truth by preaching "knowledge falsely so called."On my arrival at Rome, I drew up a list of the succession of bishops down to Anicetus, whose deacon was Eleutherus. To Anicetus succeeded Soter, and after him came Eleutherus. But in the case of every succession,14 and in every city, the state of affairs is in accordance with the teaching of the Law and of the Prophets and of the Lord....

Therefore was the Church called a virgin, for she was not as yet corrupted by worthless teaching.15 Thebulis it was who, displeased because he was not made bishop, first began to corrupt her by stealth. . .  . Each of these leaders in his own private and distinct capacity brought in his own private opinion. From these have come false Christs, false prophets, false apostles-men who have split up the one Church into parts16 through their corrupting doctrines, uttered in disparagement of God and of His Christ....

Jesus intended his Apostles and Paul, as well as others, to share with Gentiles, to instruct them, teach them, impart instruction, instill doctrine into them, and explain and expound the things he taught.  Not, just believing in him!

John 4:22

Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

Did you catch that?  Salvation is of the Jews.  NOT WAS, IS
.

As Gentile Christians, and according to the words used by the Holy Spirit, most have not been taught, let alone observe, the things commanded, per Acts 15:27-28. Gentiles kept the Biblical Feasts and Saturday Sabbath well after the crucifixtion of Jesus, into the fourth century when it was changed by Roman paganism.

Can you preserve those things both taught and commanded by Jesus if you ascribe to REPLACEMENT THEOLOGY which says that the Law and the Biblical Feasts have passed away and that we are no longer under the Law?  Can you preserve and obey those things both taught and commanded by Jesus if you believe that the writings and letters of Paul (New Testament) have replaced the writings of Moses (Old Testament)?   Keep in mind, it was 400 years after the crucifixtion, before there was a New Testament.

Jesus taught his followers to teach all Gentiles to observe all those things which he had previously commanded to be done. (Matthew 28:20, after the crucifiction)

Taking into account Paul's 'new creature':

It becomes obvious that Jesus intended for the Gentiles in the various nations of the world to be taught the COMMANDMENTS AND HOW TO CORRECTLY OBSERVE THEM!

Hegesippus also recorded that after all the apostles had died, corruption and false doctrine made its way into the papal church.....

Hey, no need to shout! I can read perfectly well.

Do we agree that this account is attributed to the apostle Matthew? Do we agree that Matthew is quoting our Lord? Do we agree that if it is written in the Bible, then indeed Christ said this?

You refer to Hegesippus. But, who was Hegesippus? Very little is known of Hegesippus.[ Probably he was a Palestinian Jew, born c. 110, and later converted to Christianity. Under Pope Anicetus (155-166) he undertook a journey throughout Christendom, which led him to Corinth and later to Rome. The purpose of this trip was to collect on the spot the teachings of the various churches which he visited, and to ascertain their uniformity with Rome. He determined in this city the list of the succession of bishops down to Anicetus. On his return to his native land he composed, during the pontificate of Pope Eleutherius (174-189), According to the Paschal Chronicle, he died c. 180.

The work of Hegesippus bears the title of Memoirs ('Upomnhmata). It comprised five books, but is almost entirely lost. We are able, however, to form some idea of the work with the aid of indications and citations furnished by Eusebius. It was not, as St. Jerome would have it, a coherent history of the Church from the passion of our Lord until the middle of the second century, but rather a polemical treatise against the Gnostics, setting forth the facts and the evidence for the truth of the Church's official teaching. Eusebius does not hesitate to rank Hegesippus among the defenders of tradition. "He has narrated," he says, "in a very simple way the infallible tradition of the Apostolic teaching." This is the reason why Hegesippus was so interested in the traditions of the churches and in the succession of the bishops who guaranteed their integrity.

Hegesippus does not seem to have been a very learned man nor a very able writer. His Greek is awkward and he lacked critical acumen; but he was an attentive observer and a sincere witness, highly esteemed by Eusebius.

Eusebius of Caesarea

"At that time [A.D. 150] there flourished in the Church Hegesippus, whom we know from what has gone before, and Dionysius, bishop of Corinth, and another bishop, Pinytus of Crete, and besides these, Philip, and Apollinarius, and Melito, and Musanus, and Modestus, and, finally, Irenaeus. From them has come down to us in writing, the sound and orthodox faith received from tradition" (Church History 4:21).

So, what is your point? Christ handed His church to Peter. Hegesippus, 100 years later, documents the papal descendency.
