1  Vindicate me, my God,

    and plead my cause

    against an unfaithful nation.

Rescue me from those who are

    deceitful and wicked.

2  You are God my stronghold.

    Why have you rejected me?

Why must I go about mourning,

    oppressed by the enemy?

3  Send me your light and your faithful care,

    let them lead me;

let them bring me to your holy mountain,

    to the place where you dwell.

4  Then I will go to the altar of God,

    to God, my joy and my delight.

Here are some idioms that are common in American English:

"I Could Just KICK Myself!"

"Don't Beat Yourself Up Over It!"

"I REALLY Stepped In It This Time!"

"Open Mouth, Insert Foot."

While we recognize these expressions of regret and self-incrimination, a new English Speaker might be puzzled by your colorful language. He might wonder how you could possibly fit your foot in your mouth, or use that same foot to kick yourself. The Laws of Physics and Biology would work against you.

David does a lot of complaining to God (and who doesn't?), but, in the midst of it, he gets a flash of insight and realizes to WHOM he's complaining. He yanks on the reins and talks to his own soul:

"Why are you downcast, Oh my Soul?"

He admonishes his own soul to TRUST in the LORD, even when it looks like everything is against him.

Some preachers say we shouldn't "complain" at all. They say that complaining is "negative thinking" and is a symptom of "lack of faith". But, here is David, a "Man After God's Own Heart", and he's doing a lot of complaining. Why are we even allowed to witness that? Wouldn't the Author of the Inspired Word off God wish to keep that negative stuff OUT of the Bible?

It's my humble opinion that God wants us to be totally transparent with Him. He's Omniscient anyway, so there's no way we can deceive Him. When we present a false front to the Almighty to appear positive and happy despite our suffering, the only ones we deceive are ourselves.

Yes, David complains that everybody is against him. Yes, he lays out his case before God, like a defense lawyer.

But then, he looks inward and realizes that, whatever happens, God is in Control, and LOVES him.

That's Why his complaint turns to Praise.
