Even as respect for the Pope as the Vicar of Christ remains non-negotiable, past and present restrictions on the ancient rite—particularly alongside the ready accommodation of other groups in the same basilica—ignite serious questions about coherence, pastoral responsiveness, and what “unity” truly means in Rome’s vision.
Based on testimonies from organizers coordinating the annual Ad Petri Sedem pilgrimage, the Secretariat of State has disclosed that permission to hold the Pontifical Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica (the Vatican’s principal basilica) is being denied “at least for this year.” Instead, Bishop Schneider would celebrate the TLM at the high altar of the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, a church replete with apostolic heritage—and, as organizers alluded to with irony, the very basilica that houses the tomb of Pope Francis (whose pontificate unleashed the “Traditionis Custodes” document that empowered bishops around the world to restrict the TLM).

The prelate also cautioned that for the Vatican to forgo this opportunity would risk “a truly unnecessary and painful” division for which “the responsibility would rest primarily with the Holy See.”
In his first public statement since Rome declared that six SSPX bishops had automatically incurred excommunication following the SSPX’s episcopal consecrations at Écône this year, Bishop Schneider maintains that the SSPX was confronted with an uncommon and tragic choice: either remain faithful to the Catholic faith as it has always been taught or seek formal recognition from the Holy See.
Besides, the prelate tried to situate the contemporary church crisis within a broader historical pattern, drawing a parallel to the fourth-century ordeal of St. Athanasius of Alexandria. At that time, Pope Liberius—bowing to imperial pressure—entered into communion with Arian bishops and ordered Athanasius to do likewise. Athanasius did not give in, and for his defiance was excommunicated by the Pope himself, who accused him of “troubling the peace of the Church.”
Bishop Schneider further averred that, rather than endangering the Church’s unity, the SSPX performs “a great service” of “historical value” by upholding doctrinal and liturgical clarity.
Notably, the bishop’s words are not replete with the language and attitude of rebellion; instead, these statements reflect his love and respect for both the papacy and the faith the papacy is sworn to preserve. What is more, his remarks also reflect the language of charity, given that he has frequently implored Rome to treat the SSPX with “pastoral generosity” and to acknowledge the SSPX’s fidelity to the TLM and traditional Catholic teaching.

In view of this, the Vatican’s refusal to let Bishop Schneider celebrate the TLM at St. Peter’s can be unsurprisingly interpreted by some observers as a form of pettiness at first glance.
Logically speaking, it is challenging to comprehend why the ancient rite—celebrated by a bishop who once served as the Holy See’s own visitor to the SSPX—appears to be deemed as a liability. Yet this phenomenon is less startling once we admit that some of the most resolute adversaries of the Church’s liturgical and doctrinal heritage currently work from within her own structures. Far from being external agitators, they are frequently insiders—clergy, theologians, and curial functionaries—who attempt to sideline the TLM, castigating it as a source of disunity or an unwanted relic of the past. In their campaign to downplay or eradicate the TLM, these elements treat fidelity to the Church’s inherited forms of worship not as a guarantee of continuity, but as a hindrance to a newly conceived ecclesial identity.
In this context, Cardinal Robert Sarah’s recent words of caution are especially significant.
“We, as a Church, cannot declare war on those who devoutly attend Mass simply because they prefer one form over another; this is a shortsighted and entirely ideological stance and, therefore, neither pastoral nor Christian. It is harmful and destructive to the Church.”
The cardinal subsequently lauded Pope Benedict XVI’s 2007 liberalization of the TLM and decried Pope Francis’s 2021 restrictions as neither “sensible” nor “respectful.” Indeed, as Cardinal Sarah’s comments have shown one need not scoff at papal authority to concede that a policy perceived as punitive risks driving away the very faithful it alleges to unite.
Genuine respect for Pope Leo XIV—and for Pope Francis before him—demands more than mere silence; it calls for respectful requests for the Catholic truth to be clarified by none other than the Church’s supreme legislator, i.e., the Pope himself.

As can be seen, Bishop Schneider’s own interventions demonstrate this respectful and measured approach. The prelate respectfully contests generalized assertions about participation in the TLM, observing that the Council Fathers themselves authorized a prudent, organic reform that preserved Latin in the Canon and much of the Ordinary. Importantly, Bishop Schneider does not challenge papal authority; instead, he urges that it be exercised with accuracy and fairness. This is not dissent—it is discipleship.
Undeniably, the Vatican’s recent refusal to let Bishop Schneider celebrate the TLM at St. Peter’s is a setback for those hoping that the Roman authorities would be more lenient to TLM-loving Catholics. Yet this move is also a clarion call to pray and to continue to champion the TLM and traditional Catholic doctrine without bitterness and without surrender. We honor the Pope by imploring him to fully exercise his Petrine office by clarifying doctrinal ambiguities; we honor the Church by refusing to let fear dictate our fidelity to her teachings.
Ultimately, St. Peter’s Basilica belongs to Our Lord Jesus Christ, not to any secretariat at any given point in time. And Our Lord is present—no less truly—at the high altar of Saint Mary Major, where Bishop Schneider will offer the same Sacrifice of the Mass, in the same faith, for the same Bride of Christ. Still, let no one pretend that the Roman Catholic Church is well served when her most steadfast bishops are deemed as troublemakers or ignored in the very basilica containing the remains of the Prince of Apostles.

Seems the LGBT crowd believe they are gaining the upper hand in an impasse with Traditional Catholics, (Trads). Maybe with a little luck they can get Leo to accept practicing homosexuality as acceptable and not sinful to rid themselves of guilt. With Leo on their side Christ’s Teachings can be changed and LGBT practices made acceptable and not sinful as part of Catholic Doctrine.
By denying the Bishop’s Right to say a Latin Mass is a giant step in turning the Church against Christ and His Teachings and it will give homos a landside achievement in their efforts to make homosexuality an ordinary practice and approved by the Church.
They don’t realize this could not be farther from the Christ’s Desire for all men to enter His Kingdom.

On my own level those very early years were confusing- I thought Jesus was Italian and figured he was a good Jew because of that...I just could never figure out how Jesus got from Nazareth to the Vatican in Italy.
