The key is in the fetish word of the last council: “aggiornamento”, updating, updating. The Church, an institution that is not of this world but is in this world, is called to maintain its perennial doctrine, the eternal message of Christ, valid for all times, while studying the spirit of each age to adapt the form of the message so that it reaches the world effectively.
That balancing act is risky, and there is always the danger of, as the Anglo saying goes, throwing the child out with the dirty bath water.
What we see today is, according to many, the worst of both worlds. On the one hand, we see how the attempt to adapt the message to current affairs often leads to its corruption. We hear statements from high prelates, favored or appointed by Francis, who defend positions incompatible with the perennial moral doctrine of the Church, such as the statements of Cardinals Hollerich and McElroy in favor of 'reconsidering' Catholic morality regarding sodomy. And we also see that there is no response from Rome. They are not officially refuted or punished; rather, they become the best positioned prelates in the ecclesiastical structure.
On the other hand, this silent indulgence does not apply to orthodox priests and prelates who are neglected for clearly applying the doctrine. In the case of those who favor the traditional rite of the sacraments, the same one that has nourished the spiritual life of the overwhelming majority of the saints, the restrictions come, instead, quick as lightning.

This is the point that Michael Knowles often makes so well, “The Catholic Church is perhaps the only institution in which people in their 80s and 90s routinely tell people in their 20s and 30s to get with the times.”
