The article totally refuses to acknowledge the possibility of supply chain breakdowns—hilariously dumb in retrospect.
My memory from back in the day is that many factory managers (unlike the HBS eggheads) were concerned about possible supply chain breakdowns. They remembered the “oil crisis” from the 1970s and were nervous about the trustworthiness of overseas suppliers of key materials.
That’s interesting. I had no idea JIT went back so far. First I started hearing about it was late 90s early 2000s, as part of the WalMart revolution.
It is funny that they didn’t mention supply chain breakdown. Cause that is the obvious weakness. Oh well, I just live here, nobody’s put me in charge of anything.
