UN Security Council to hold emergency session over Ben-Gvir's Temple Mount visit - report

Israel's new national security minister earlier visited the Jerusalem holy site, drawing condemnation

The United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency session to discuss the recent visit by Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir to Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, which sparked international backlash, a report said Tuesday.

An unnamed senior diplomat told The Times of Israel that a date has not yet been set, but the meeting could take place as early as Thursday.

Earlier on Tuesday, the United Arab Emirates and China asked the UN Security Council to meet shortly after Ben-Gvir's controversial visit, according to diplomats. The Temple Mount is where Israel's First and Second Temples stood and is the holiest site in Judaism. It is also the site of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third-holiest site in Islam. The UAE joined Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Qatar in condemning the first visit by an Israeli government minister to the Temple Mount in five years.

While government ministers have come to the holy place in the past, it remains a flash point for escalations between Palestinians and Israelis. Most notably, late prime minister Ariel Sharon's visit there in 2000 is seen as the straw that broke the camel's back in sparking the Second Intifada.

Ben-Gvir is a controversial figure in Israel, with opponents from a broad spectrum of Israeli political stances. His visit was condemned in newspapers affiliated with ultra-Orthodox groups, whose rabbis generally consider such tours on the site against Jewish law.

However, his visit was reportedly cleared by Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Israel's Opposition Leader Yair Lapid earlier said the visit could incite violence, and Hamas warned Israel against such a move. Some clashes were reported in Jerusalem, but Israel has yet to experience any serious backlash.

A rocket was launched Tuesday night from the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, although it did not pass the security fence. This likely indicates it was shot by one of the other militant groups in the Palestinian enclave, and that Hamas is - for the time being - not responding to what Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas called a "provocation."

Abbas said he would go to the UN Security Council over Ben-Gvir's tour.

U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price said the Biden administration opposes "any unilateral actions that undercut the historic status quo."

I’m sure our dear leader will vigorously support our Israeli allies.

Much like Russia and CHina have done in the past, Israel needs to take the vocal stance that they will not tolerate interference in their internal matters.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see such prohibitions here in the US - visits to places that would be offensive as statues and monuments are now to some creatures! We haven’t reached our limit of ridiculous actions! An inch = a mile!

Russia and China are just looking for a reason to invade Israel along with their ally Iran and their sycophantic following.........................

There is a ‘Indian Temple Mound’ right here in our downtown Ft. Walton Beach, (It’s really just a big pile of dirt with trees on it). It has a recreated structure on it that is supposed to represent the original from a thousand years ago.

We used to be able to walk upon it, there are concrete sidewalks on it, and enjoy the view and the cool shade on a hot summer day.

But NOT ANY MORE!

Some Indians, er, uh, I mean, NATIVE Americans, uh, Indigenous People, oops, First Peoples, COMPLAINED that it was a ‘holy site’ and white people were desecrating it by walking around on it.

So it is now chained off and no one is allowed to walk on it at all EXCEPT these so-called Native Americans.....................

I didn’t believe it possible for the UnitedNazis (as enabled and quite possibly orchestrated by the USA nazi- infested Snske Department) to disgrace itself any worse than it has already for years and years.

The evil basturds have figured out how to dig their hole even deeper now. It’s really quite amazing

Yeah, it’s such an attraction that I never bothered to go see it. I’ll drive to Pensacola and see the free National Naval Aviation Museum and eat at Peg Leg Petes and then drive back to Okaloosa Island past the “Indian Temple Mound” without slowing down.

It has been closed to the public since the Terrorist Attack in 2019, except on special days, otherwise you must have a DoD ID card or be escorted by someone who has one.

Nobody goes to Ft. Walton in the middle of summer. It's too crowded. Late September, early October is the time and if you really want solitude go in between hurricanes like I did once. No lines at restaurants.
Didn't know about the museum closure. It's been awhile since I've been. Bummer. I like that place.

The DOT even had to make a special provision to not disturb it when they build the new Brooks Bridge.

That will be a traffic disaster for at least 5 years while construction takes place............

The Pensacola City Fathers (& Mothers! 😉) want them to reopen it, as it attracts tourists, but so far no go. 😢 ..............
