Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Heavenly Father

May Your Kingdom Come!

You are The One Who Stands For Us

Amidst The Raging Foes.

You Are Our Sheltering Tower,

You Are Our Champion.

All human heroes will eventually fail us,

No matter how well-intentioned they may be.

But You never fail.

You Alone are the One True God Over All!




Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

...your will be done,
    on earth as it is in heaven.
When I taught Voice, I recognized that Phrasing was just as important as Tonal Color, Pitch, and Breathing. I emphasized that, while a filmmaker has two hours to tell his story, a songwriter has about two and a half minutes. I devised a little Drama Exercise to show how Phrasing can change the meaning of a song:

Say this sentence seven times, each time emphasizing a different word:

1. ARE you going out with me tonight?

2. Are YOU going out with me tonight?

3. Are you GOING out with me tonight?

4. Are you going OUT with me tonight?

5. Are you going out WITH me tonight?

6. Are you going out with ME tonight?

7. Are you going out with me TONIGHT?

Try it yourself, out loud. You'll see that each "Phrasing" of the seven word sentence conveys a slightly different meaning.

The singer Frank Sinatra was renowned for his Phrasing. While he had a nice baritone voice, it wasn't his actual voice that caused his audiences to swoon. Nor was it what he sang. It was HOW he sang.

This brings us to what is, in my humble opinion, the most misunderstood Phrasing in the entire New Testament. It has to do with "Thy Will Be Done."

Most of us learned our prayers in English, perhaps from a Prayer-Book or a King James Bible. Most of us, when saying "Thy Will Be Done" insert a mental comma (or even a period) after the word "Done." That's because the line has the same amount of syllables as the previous one and sort of rhymes. Also, the word "Done" has a finality to it that says, basically, that we're "done" with that phrase. Period. On to the next phrase which is a sentence fragment: "On earth as it is in heaven."

This English Phrasing may or may not be in other languages, but it is perpetuated in musical settings of the Lord's Prayer, especially the beloved one composed by Albert Hay Malotte in 1935. And so "Thy Will Be Done" stands by itself, and implies that God knows best and His Will be done even if we are not happy about it. It is even sometimes included in a prayer that one has a feeling God won't answer, as in: "Nevertheless, Thy Will Be Done." That is pretty sad, but I am sure you may have heard that type of prayer.

Scripture tells us that, in order to come to God we need to first believe in Him and believe that He loves us and wants the best for us. That is His Will. This meaning is conveyed in the Lord's Prayer simply by moving the comma from after "Done" to right after the word "Earth". This is what you get:

...Thy Will be done on Earth,
as it is in Heaven."

Think about it. Imagine a World where God's Will is Done, just as it is in Heaven! Why, that would be so lovely. It's a Beautiful thing to pray. And, since God promises "a New Heaven and a New Earth", it is a Scriptural thing to pray for as well. It goes perfectly with the previous Petition "Thy Kingdom Come". And, most of all, it conveys that God's Will is a GOOD thing that we WANT to happen, not something we yield to with resignation. I would LOVE to see God's Will be done on this tormented planet!
