Genesis 25

Ishmael’s Sons

12 This is the account of the family line of Abraham’s son Ishmael, whom Sarah’s slave, Hagar the Egyptian, bore to Abraham.

13 These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, listed in the order of their birth: Nebaioth the firstborn of Ishmael, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah. 16 These were the sons of Ishmael, and these are the names of the twelve tribal rulers according to their settlements and camps. 17 Ishmael lived a hundred and thirty-seven years. He breathed his last and died, and he was gathered to his people. 18 His descendants settled in the area from Havilah to Shur, near the eastern border of Egypt, as you go toward Ashur. Our God,
How Excellent Is Your Name Over All The Earth!
How Mighty,
How Majestic,
and How Wonderful!

Let all that has been Concealed

Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

A few weeks ago, I had a clogged drain which caused a lot of water in my kitchen sink cabinet. I promply called the Plumber and had the drain cleared, and, during that time noticed that the kitchen counter was slowly sinking down, away from the backsplash.

"YIKES!" I mused. "Water must have pooled underneath the dishwasher and undermined the sub flooring."

I stood back from the counter and looked at the eight feet of cabinet, countertop, sink, and dishwasher. The whole room seemed to be sagging towards the outer right corner of the trailer. I had seen chipmunks and rabbits dashing under the house at that corner, and visualized them munching away on dry rot and undermining the whole front of my house. The trailer is quite old as trailers go, and so no contractor wants to touch it. However, I got out my phone and began searching. I figured I could get a contractor IF I combined the repair with a complete kitchen renovation. I have no money, but lots of credit, so maybe that would entice someone to actually take a job to keep an old widow's house from collapsing and get paid handsomely for it. And so, I called and called, and kept getting these three answers:

1. "I'll Get Back To You."
2. "I'm Too Busy."
3. "The Job is Too Small."
and, of course:
4. "I DON'T DO TRAILERS."

I started to lose sleep worrying if my house was going to become condemned as unsafe, and be declared beyond repair. And, even though it is only June, Winter in New England is always around the corner. Finally, I called my younger brother Ed, and he was at my home in less than an hour.

First, we had to remove the skirting at the front of the house and assess the damage. As my brother unscrewed to vinyl skirting, I envisioned the prospect of opening a fresh grave, with rodents, insects, animal bodies, mold, mildew, rotted wood, filth and corruption lurking under that corner. I was surprised when, instead of a foul odor escaping, there was instead a sweet aroma of fresh wood and clean dry earth. Ed crawled under with his flashlight, and invited me to take a look. I crawled under and saw that the whole kitchen-sink area, about 16 square feet, had been built onto the trailer, cantilevered to become what we call in "trailer-land" a "Bump-Out". It had no visable means of support, but was fresh and clean, and showed no signs of sagging. Ed got out a level, and held it here and there, showing no sag at all. Nevertheless, we decided it would be wise to jack up the house and put in some additional support.

So, Ed got three Bottle-Jacks out of his truck, placed them in appropriate places, and began to jack up the whole kitchen. Now I was visualizing the ceramic floor cracking up, but I would deal with that later. We put in the supports, undid the jacks, and went inside.

Inside, the ceramic floor was fine, but the floor STILL appeared to be sagging! Yet, when Ed placed the level on the floor, it came up level. What the heck was going on?

Then Ed realized that it wasn't the HOUSE that was sagging, it was the Countertop, which, made of laminate, was unable to support its own weight. The "sagging" of the floor was an optical illusion. We promptly salvaged some scraps of wood from my shed, and shored the whole thing up. Now it's perfect and will probably outlast the rest of the house. I told Ed he had saved me about $15,000 and tried to give him some money, but he only took half of what I was trying to give him.

Now I feel like calling every one of those contractors and saying:

"FORGEDDABOUT IT! My little brother and I took care of it ourselves!"

Today's Passage of Scripture tells us what happened to Ishmael, Isaac's half-brother. Ishmael was actually Abraham's First-Born, but was the result of Sarah and Abraham's lack of trust in God's Promise. They foolishly thought they could hasten God's plan by cooking up a scheme that would force His hand. It was kind of like me going into massive debt to do a Kitchen Renovation in order to get a sub-floor fixed. Sarah's age, the biology of humans, and the long wait for fulfillment created an "Optical Illusion" that cause both Sarah and Abraham to visualize the Worst Case Scenario...that they would die before God would keep His Promise to them. God, of course, kept His Promise, but Sarah and Abraham's lack of faith and attempt at pre-empting God was not without consequences. Ishmael had many sons, and they prospered, but there was always the hostility an sense of betrayal which persists to this day.
