Even with the oddness of what people think he did and how that fits in with religion, I am just surprised there wasn’t any cursing, rap or otherwise going on. I went to high school just outside of Decatur and I shudder to imagine what the whole area is like now.

A surprisingly number of pastor’s training basically consists of learning to public speak and very little training in the Word itself.

Possibly a small medium at large?

Can the Word be taught to people who aren’t filled with the Spirit?

Not very easily, no.

I placed an order for large tater tots yesterday. The guy behind the counter said we only have small and medium.
I said, “So that means the medium is the large.”
He just stared at me with a confused look.

[The embrace of evil is accelerating.]

Yes, some idiotic soap opera had some woman (actress) playing a role where she is trying to contact “spirits”. Caught like 40 seconds of it.

Oh, “spirits” will respond. They will NOT be who they pretend to be.

Nothing irritates me more during a sermon than when the preacher spends most of his time talking about himself.

I’ve also heard many that could have said in 10 minutes what they took an hour to say.

I also deplore ‘scripture rationing messages’, where only a verse or two is mentioned. You have an audience that, for the most part, doesn’t read their Bible. The message needs to be dominated by the Word.

Absolutely. Jesus taught the lost. The book of Acts shows the apostles preaching to the lost.

“...the preacher spends most of his time talking about himself.

Preachers are not immune from suffering personality disorders. Talking about yourself excessively and talking a lot without saying anything meaningful are both symptoms of such disorders.

I have a friend that takes f o r e v e r to tell a story.

He admits his own brother interupts him sometimes, saying:

“Land the plane, Jeff,... land... the... plane.

There’s a fine line with storytelling though. Not enough details and you will never make a good storyteller. Nobody wants to hear you say “it was fine” when they ask about your vacation to a tropical paradise.

I once knew a guy who was small, but a Medium.

His name was Shorty. He was about 4’2” tall.

He once sued the city of Richmond for building the sidewalks too close to his ass.

That’s my story and I’m stickin to it.

Yes. At the funeral of my husband’s aunt, the pastor waxed at length about his recent trip to Egypt. The woman had spent 90 years as a servant of Christ in motherhood, teaching, and missionary work. The pastor spoke of none of that. I was furious.

**Preaching is not teaching.**

You learn from both, do you not? Preaching is emphatic and less detailed. Teaching is less emphatic but definitely detailed.

I could not possibly count the times an unbeliever attended a mid-week Bible study and left better informed.

To the Philippian prison guard, Paul and Silas definitely preached (in Acts 16:31), but (in 16:32) “...they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.” They apparently taught baptism, because:

“And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.” 16:33

“And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.” Matt. 1:11

Points well-taken.

Let me clarify the concern I had in my original comment.

Can a person attending seminary who is not a spirit-filled believer be taught the Truth about the Gospel if that student is unwilling to be, in the process, filled by or, at a minimum, led by the Holy Spirit?

The believer and unbeliever can both learn something. But, it would seem to me, the unbeliever could not grasp the real meaning of the Gospel.

I might draw an analogy to times I have been in a calculus class and felt that while I was indeed learning the lesson, the light in my mind had not yet turned on re: the matter at hand.
