'Shocking' New Poll: Only 37 Percent of U.S. Pastors Hold a Biblical Worldview

A majority of Christian pastors in the United States do not hold a biblical worldview, according to surprising new research from pollster George Barna, who says the data shows a spiritual awakening is “needed just as desperately in our pulpits as in the pews.”

The survey, released Thursday by the Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University, shows that only 37 percent of pastors in the U.S. hold a biblical worldview.

Among senior/lead pastors, 41 percent possess a biblical worldview – the highest percentage within the sub-groups of pastors. Less than one-third of associate/assistant pastors (28 percent), teaching pastors (13 percent) and children’s/youth pastors (12 percent) hold a biblical worldview, the data found.

An accompanying report labeled the findings “shocking.”

“This is another strong piece of evidence that the culture is influencing the American church more than Christian churches are influencing the culture,” said Barna, director of research at the university’s Cultural Research Center.

I'm not "shocked".

Most pundits in the pews are unworthy and unqualified for the title of "pastor".

I’m not shocked either. We’re in the last days apostasy. What else can we expect, other than it getting much worse?

0.001% of mainline Christian pastors hold a biblical word view.

When a “pastor” states they are “pro choice”, then it is certain that they are vile, complete phonies. They are capable of promoting any abomination.

“God is in the transformation business,” he said. “Pastors who are willing to allow Him to transform their thinking and behavior can emerge from that process as a powerful example of what can happen when one’s heart, mind and soul are surrendered to God. It certainly seems that if America is going to experience a spiritual revival, that awakening is needed just as desperately in our pulpits as in the pews.”

Concluding paragraph.

The new covenant appoints us all roles in pastoring and prophesizing. This is not about them “pastors”.

Yep

Just heard Mike Bickle say no one (in America) apparently need fear going through the Great Tribulation. Guess he can’t read Revelation.

He’s post-trib of course.

I follow several post-millennial/post-trib pastors and I really don’t know what world they live in. It’s like they’re in a hermetically sealed bubble.

I’m convinced an “awaking” is coming, like it or not, prepared or not.

Guess they can’t read Revelation 13:16-18 and Revelation 20:4.

Well once a Tribulation Saint is resurrected, then the godless and Satan won’t be able to touch then ever again.

I’m not “shocked“

I’m not either. Nowadays one can believe in anything and claim to be Christian.

“Keep in mind,” Barna said, “a person’s worldview primarily develops before the age of 13, then goes through a period of refinement during their teens and twenties.

Folks,

“‘This is another strong piece of evidence that the culture is influencing the American church more than Christian churches are influencing the culture,’ said Barna, director of research at the university’s Cultural Research Center.”

I have to somewhat disagree with that statement. Many pastors and churches have ALWAYS been influenced by the culture; the culture was once just infused with Christian ethics and it wasn’t hard to be “Christian” in that environment. A Christian church was simply in tune with the prevailing cultural milieu. There was no contrast opportunities. As the culture changed, so did the the church.

If anyone finds the questions asked in the survey, please link. (I tried.)

But I’ve seen them in Barna’s past surveys. IMHO, we have our differences, but Christian Freepers here of all denominations would agree on 90-95% of the correct “Christian world view” answers.

I wonder whose definition of a “biblical worldview” they are using for the standard? I didn’t see it in the article or the linked summary of the survey results. The term “biblical worldview” is fluid and can arguably vary from denomination to denomination, from church community to church community, and even from believer to believer. I doubt there is any real consensus on this. Each of us here could state what we believe it to be, and someone (possibly everyone) here would, based on their own reading of the Bible, disagree. Who is to say? It basically boils down to “whoever agrees with my personal interpretation of the Bible.”

If they asked the right questions it would probably be more like 5%. Curious what their survey questions were and what a “passing” grade was.

I wonder how they define “Biblical worldview”? Was it some sort of quiz where they decided if they answered the questions correctly or not?

when you have a congregaion that comes nack eith ‘yeah, you right’, and, does not “read yhe checklist for pastors” in the letters to Timothy, a pastor can say a lot of things that will be swallowed.

Exactly so. Who gets to say that Pre-millennialism, Post-Millennialism, or Amillennialism is the “correct” Biblican worldview. And what about Preterists?

If someone is going to say “it’s my way or the highway” then religious discourse will have sunk to the same level as American politics.

Isn’t he that fat, slovenly, mumbling, jackass that looks like Jabba the Hut’s stunt double?
