I don’t see his comments as odd at all. In a mainly Catholic/ Orthodox country, you celebrate what they do. While Jewish guy, he is the chief executive of all the country. I expect that he like most offer his people groups encouragement as it pertains to them. Would anyone think he’d vilify Easter because he’s a Jew?
In the midst of a war, it is entirely appropriate for the head of state to ask God to save them from the invader, and to do it publicly.
