Netherlands congregation leaves Russian Orthodox Church over Ukraine war

(CP) A congregation in the Netherlands is seeking to leave the Russian Orthodox Church in opposition to Patriarch Kirill of Moscow's support for the invasion of Ukraine, filing a request for "canonical dismissal"

The Russian Orthodox Parish of Saint Nicholas of Myra in Amsterdam posted an announcement on its Facebook page last Saturday stating that "the clergy unanimously announced that it is no longer possible for them to function within the Moscow Patriarchate and provide a spiritually safe environment for our faithful."

The announcement was "extremely painful and difficult for all concerned" and came in response to what the parish called a "threat to the parish and the clergy."

I’ve seen my 1998 posts on FR, that was when it was a website. I’m talking about when it was on the old BBS system. I think it was more like 1995 or 1996.

One of the things that the S-F-B Western clowns miss is the Big Tell about the ordinary Russian people.

The Commies stomped and stomped and stomped on the Church in the Soviet Union for decade after decade.

Yet here they are...

“little different to the Vatican as far as giving its stamp of approval to the state”

The Vatican, unlike the Russian Orthodox Church, has had to deal with a great many states at once for over 1500 years, ever since the collapse of the Roman empire. And if you dig into Church history, there was perpetual conflict with these potentates. If it wasn’t one character acting up it was another. In the medieval period there was always some king excommunicated or threatened with it. That’s one reason the Church was so desperate to hold on to its own territories in Italy, the Papal States.

All these kings and dukes and whatnot wanted church revenues, church lands, control over appointments, etc. and etc. Often enough they wanted control over Popes.

This famous incident gives some idea of what the Church was dealing with on a regular basis -

And whenever some such situation was sorted out, there was another.

The Orthodox Church in Russia may feel it has no choice but a parish in Netherlands doesn’t have the same constraints. I attend a Russian Orthodox Church that condemns the war and Putin, and is raising money for Ukrainian humanitarian assistance.

And you have the right to do so. Which I respect even though I think it is a temporal over reaction

Right, so lets hear you bash Australia for every time you joined in on one of those war misadventures. Suggest 10 posts bashing Aussie citizens who supported them, 10 posts bashing the Aussue politicians who supported them, then you can do a post about the US.

Those of us in America are really keen to hear how Australia went so fascist in so short a period of time.

The Vatican crowned numerous heads of the Holy Roman Empire. Intimstely involved in machinations in Europe. The Catholic faith was the official religion of the HRE. Akin to EOC in Russia

I call out stuff in Australia. Partic the covid over reach. Our involvement in Vietnam was a mistake. As wash GW2. Initial Afghan deployment was correct, but staying for the pipe dream neocon culture re imaging was folly and a mistake. I love the U.S A. I have a daughter who lives in California. I take a keen interest in U.S politics. My favourite music is American. I love Americana even though a lot of it escapes me. But that doesn’t mean I concur with every nutty thing you do in the world.

How stupid.

So, we’re punishing the Russian people not Putin.

Only Tucker Carlson, is asking the questions.

Sanctions never curtail dictators, only strength, and the only strength is coming from the money and so called military equipment we’re sending them.

The cowards in Congress like it that way.

Putin, knows Biden is not in charge, and a coward

Now we’ve given the weaponry to Ukraine to continue this war on for weeks to come.

The Catholic church was the official religion of everyone in Western Europe, and most of Central Europe. Every monarch anywhere was crowned by an Archbishop, a Cardinal or the Pope.
It was not all about the HRE. And the HRE was not the most powerful entity in Europe. And the Church certainly didn’t pick the HRE.
And of course the Church was up to its eyeballs in politics. It was a player, not a pawn.
The Orthodox Church was much more often a pawn, not a player.

I was hit-and-miss here during Lucy Goldberg’s reign (radio)... About when was that? 2000? Ben wasn’t yet a teenager, but eloquent back then. ‘Can’t tolerate him now.

That what makes Australia so screwed up, no fraud, the majority willingly voted for politicians who would treat them like slaves.
