The Diocese of San Bernardino says its opening Mass for the Synod on Synodality Oct. 17 sought to celebrate the California diocese’s rich cultural diversity and welcome those on the “periphery” of the Church.
But the liturgy’s unusual pageantry, featuring liturgical dancers, a Native American prayer to the “four directions,” and the appearance at the end of Mass of a colorfully costumed figure that resembled traditional representations of an Aztec demon, has raised eyebrows and sparked criticism on social media.
“Paganism in full bloom,” read one comment on YouTube. “This is an absolute disgrace to God and His Holy Church,” stated another.
The Synod on Synodality is a global consultative process that Pope Francis initiated earlier this month to gather input from Catholics and others around the world about important issues confronting the Church. Many U.S. dioceses held Masses last weekend to inaugurate a yearlong period of listening sessions and other means of soliciting feedback.

Where is the Pachamama (Mother Earth), the Pope so dearly loves?
Justification?
1 timothy 4
4 For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer
Vatican II is wonderful.
Unfortunately, this is what happens when the focus of The Mass is transferred from the “Sacrifice of Christ” to “the Last Supper”. People now think it is all about Dinner Theater. My heart weeps.
Can’t wait for them to start ripping the hearts out of prisoners and playing soccer with their severed heads.
Huh?
You can lay this right at the feet of the local bishop. No matter how kooky Pope Francis is, the buck stops at the door to the chancery. Thank God there are still a few bishops here in the US that would not allow this sacrilege. And a great many good priests, as well.
The context there relates to food.
1 Tim 4:1 is probably more instructive here
These are thing “Man” created, not “God.”
I suppose you would be fine with the statue of “Baphomet” in the front of your church, as long as a prayer was first said. After all, according to you, God made it for us.
Really, I don’t understand the shallowness of thinking some have here.
… context is about food - and making legalistic rules not found in Scripture.
1 Timothy 4:4–5
“For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.”
Sorta. The bishops who are doing this are doing it because of Francis.
They’re go-along to get along guys, not bright or competent, and they know their only way to get ahead is by sucking up to the boss.
This bishop is an idiot but he would never have done anything like this otherwise. It’s all on the head of Bergoglio.
“Paganism in full bloom”
Just like Pope Fubar the pagan 🤪
I was looking for how these people could justify such a display,
I would never allow this in my church unless the display was intended to show that nothing but the blood of Jesus can save us.
Hilarious!!!!!!!
Exo 32:4 Then Aaron took the gold, melted it down, and molded it into the shape of a calf. When the people saw it, they exclaimed, “O Israel, these are the gods who brought you out of the land of Egypt!”
Exo 32:5 Aaron saw how excited the people were, so he built an altar in front of the calf. Then he announced, “Tomorrow will be a festival to the LORD!”
And yet other bishops, as I pointed out, are not just going along with Pope Francis. In the Catholic Church, the bishop is the supreme authority in his diocese, especially in matters such are under discussion here. The Pope is not all-powerful in that sense. The ones that go along to get along do so because they are complicit or just weaklings. But other bishops have spine and a proper understanding of their episcopal authority.
It’s true that not all bishops are doing it, but the point is that this is not a renegade bishop…he’s just doing what he thinks will get him brownie points with the boss. Being a heretic is a good way to get points under the current pope.
Bishops generally want to live quiet lives and have no problems with Rome. Some brave ones will stick their necks out and stand up for Our Lord…but they’re few and far between.
In the US, the fingers of one hand would probably suffice to count the good ones, and the same is true for Western Europe.
