Sir David Amess Death: Catholic Bishop Calls for Last Rites to Be Recognized as ‘Emergency Service’

A Catholic bishop called on Tuesday for greater recognition of the last rites as an “emergency service” in the wake of the killing of British lawmaker Sir David Amess.

Bishop Mark Davies of Shrewsbury, western England, made the appeal on Oct. 19 after police reportedly turned away a priest who sought to administer the last rites to the Catholic Member of Parliament at the scene of the attack in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.

“Every Catholic Christian hopes to receive the Sacraments and be accompanied by the prayer of the Church in the final crisis of our lives,” Davies said.

“Every believing Catholic desires to hear Christ’s words of pardon and absolution for the last time; to be strengthened by the grace of anointing; accompanied by the assurance of the Church’s prayer and whenever possible to receive Holy Communion.”

He continued: “This is something well understood in hospitals and care homes, yet the events following the murderous assault on Sir David Amess suggest this is not always comprehended in emergency situations.”

“I hope a better understanding of the eternal significance of the hour of death for Christians and the Church’s ministry as an ‘emergency service’ may result from this terrible tragedy. May Sir David rest in peace.”

Fr. Jeff Woolnough, the pastor of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Eastwood, went to Belfairs Methodist Church on Oct. 15 after he heard that Amess had been stabbed during a meeting with constituents.

According to reports, a police officer outside the church relayed his request to enter the building, but the priest was not permitted to enter. He prayed the rosary outside the police cordon instead.

I agree that priests willing to administer Extreme Unction should not be prevented from doing so using the "pandemic" as an excuse.

But the panic that the pharma companies and promulgating, being leveraged by politicians as a means to extend controls on society, being pumped up by media wh*res feasting on increased ratings with fear p*rn, and being subscribed to by a willing populace of sheep will push any kind of restrictions that further debase the population.

And that's not just in the US, that's most everywhere.

Here in Thailand, most people are cremated rather than buried (and the crematoria are located in Buddhist temples rather than at funeral parlors).

For a long time, people were so suspicious as a result of the fear p*rn that it was extremely difficult to find someplace to cremate dead relatives, and not just relatives who died supposedly because of c*vid, but from any cause. Because there was the belief that the SARS-C*V-2 virus would spread out from the smokestack and infect the people in the villages that surround the temples. Those that WOULD do it were located in the country far away from other places and the monks that performed the ceremonies would be dressed up in full space-suits to make sure they didn't get sick.

In recent months, more and more people are realizing how ridiculous this is and it's getting back to normal.

But the effectiveness of pharma- and politician-pushed fear p*rn cannot be underestimated.

“Last Rites” does nothing for the sick and dying person.

Sorry.

“Last Rites” does nothing for the sick and dying person.

Even if you reject the concept of sacramental grace, you should, if you have any humanity, recognize that it will provide comfort for the ailing person and his/her family.

Mr Regis. I wonder why you say you’re sorry. Care to explain?

There was a year after look-back of 9/11 that Raymond Arroyo did for EWTN where a few Catholic New Yorkers, some well-known, had interesting reflections.

One firefighter said he was amazed at the fear he perceived from people running away from the buildings. He said, “they were really scared. I thought. I wanted to ask them, is your conscience bothering you?”

A WSJ writer I know said, “Father George Rutler, when he heard, he ran from his parish up on Fourth Avenue near Grand Central Station all the way downtown to help. To administer last rites, confessions. He knew the firefighters would be going into the buildings.”

He was able to administer the sacraments to the men going in to help people in their last minutes to be able to get to Jesus with their souls cleansed and prepared. We have 100 years here. The rest is forever. People like the very well educated, informed, in shape and holy Fr Rutler know the value of last rites for a dying person.

Look him up. He has many publications, broadcasts and associations. Or speak with any intelligent priest. Get informed. Then form an opinion. After being informed

Care to explain?

I’m sorry it bothers you that I said, “Last Rites” has no value.

None.

Making people feel good? - give them a s’more.

An RC “priest” has no special power. He can’t deliver anything of eternal use.

Sorry.

“ An RC “priest” has no special power. He can’t deliver anything of eternal use.”

Try reading a book by any of many authors who are or were priests or saints or both.

Until then I’m afraid your opinions are very very weak. Non existent.

“An pretzel logic kind of person…You can’t respond without saying something insulting to me I am not surprised”

Yeah.

Where / How did I insult you?

Are you an RC “priest”? That’s the only POSSIBLE explanation for your meltdown.

Last Rites has no value.

If you want to help the family at the time of a death, call Hospice.

If you want to do something for the sick \ dying person, try the Roman Road not the Roman church.

James 5:13-16 is the foundation for RCC sacrament of “last rites”. The hope is to prepare a person for death. The person is anointed with a special holy oil at all the limbs and the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth to get rid any persistent elements of sin.

It is supposed that this helps the person with any spiritual conflict that might occur at the moment of death.

The anointing, along with the prayers of the priest, is expected to bring about that person’s salvation as they face death.

Problems with this are many.

First, salvation itself is a work of God and only God. It is not some work that depends on anything that we as human beings do. It is only the work of Christ don already on behalf of believers. Once a person has trusted Jesus Christ as their Savior they are ready to enter the next world. Nothing else is necessary or relevant.

“Context is king!” James did not say, “Is there any one of you dying.” Rather he said, “Is there any one of you sick?” God (through James) is not talking about impending death but rather restoration back to physical (not spiritual) health. To make this passage about death is error.

Finally, it does not say to call for the priest – instead, it says to call for the elders of the church. The leadership of the church is to be called to pray for that person’s health, relief from suffering, and their friends and family who are going through suffering. Remember, each believer in Jesus Christ is a priest.

I recommend the Book of Hebrews, and especially Galatians, chapter 3.

Supporting documentation. There’s much more to say. This is enough to answer your question.

You do not understand Catholic sacramental theology. Catholics have always maintained that sacraments get their effectiveness from the merits of Jesus’s death on the Cross, and nowhere else. The minister contributes nothing but the administration. He is an instrument. The sacraments confer grace (a gift from God), not “salvation” (also a gift from God). You are struggling to impute a fake accusation, works righteousness. The Catholic Church has always taught that salvation comes through faith. That faith also is a gift from God, not a work of the believer, except in so far as the believer willingly assents to the faith given him, cooperating with God in something he could neither have initiated nor completed on his own.

Oh! Really!

I’m sorry.

You know NOTHING about me, my past, or how your religion leads people STRAIGHT to HELL.

One day my four year old walked into my mother’s home and asked her sincerely, “Grandma, why is YOUR Jesus still hanging on the cross?“

Your sacraments and most of what the Catholic Church compels you to do are empty works!

Your religion is exactly what Jesus was talking about when he referred to the Pharisees and the Sadducees and told them that they were like whitewashed tombs.

Apparently, you did not read Galatians 3. It is a perfect description of your religion. You continue to depend upon your works and this make your faith empty and meaningless.

You say some of the right words but you have no idea what they mean, you sprinkle them sparingly in your explanation, as if that adds credence to your conclusions.

Last rites serve no purpose. Neither does your baptism, neither does your first holy communion, and neither does your confirmation. I received all of the latter by faith and they never served any eternal purpose. They certainly do not “confer grace.“ They only set up your adherants to believe they are doing the “right thing“ instead of doing what God asks in scripture.

Contrary to what you say, The Catholic Church teaches its adherents to place their so-called “faith” in their works. I know this from first hand experience.

I’ve been very clear.

I won’t be reacting to anything you say if you persist.

This thread is about a decent man who was attacked and then cruelly denied the comforts of his faith while he lay dying. No one asked you to butt in and shit all over it.
