“A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul” (Proverbs 18:7).
Now, we know the verse that says that every idle word that man shall speak, they shall give an account thereof on the day of judgement. I wonder if this verse relates to today’s verse as well. As if the two go together in some cosmic sort of way. He shall give an account, and his mouth is going to be his destruction and his lips will be the snare to his soul.
We all can think about people that we have known that were lost and were overly critical of Christianity. They were critical of their children's Christianity, of their wives Christianity, and they were very critical of the Bible. They hated the Jews, and everything associated with Israel, and were completely opposed to anything conservative, whether spiritually, or morally, or politically. We remember that they talked and talked and talked and talked for their entire lives. Right? Then they come up to their deathbed where they have one last opportunity to make things right, and they do not. After all, they have scorned God for 50 years. Right? They are not going to change now.
Many of us have known folks that couldn’t say one nice thing about the Bible-believing preacher that pastored the church, thought that Ronald Reagan was the devil incarnate and that Jimmy Carter was basically the second coming of Jesus Christ. If you loved the Lord at all, you just didn’t want to be around him very long because he was that mean, and it was bad, and far as we know went to his grave with those considerations in mind.
They hated the Jews and thought anybody that was a Christian was nothing more than some kind of a holy roller and a complete fraud. You learn to just avoid discussing any subject with them that might result in a big brouhaha about politics or whatever.
As far as anyone knows, these old men went to their graves with the same sentiments that they had expressed with his mouth all those years. I think a lot of it has to do with how they talk and talk and talk and then when the day comes that they could change; they have said so much that now they cannot going to go back on it.
“A fool's mouth is his destruction,” because he doesn’t trust Christ, he trusts only himself, so he ends up destroying his own life and his own soul.
“. . . and his lips are the snare of his soul,” they trap his soul. Some men say, “I’d never do that!” and he will not do it because of what he said. They said, “I’d never walk the aisle in a Bible-believing, fundamental church and pray like those idiots do!” and they will not do it. They might say that out on a job to be macho and manly, and the Devil might just hold them to it. Somebody will try to get them to come to church and the Devil will say, “You remember what you said? You said you would never go there.” And his pride will well up in him, and say, “No way!”
We are always better off to never say never. Haven’t most of us already eaten too much crow for one life? Now, a man does grow a bit over the years, and we might have said something ten years ago that we regret today, or just grew out of that particular belief attributing to more study and more knowledge. It is just better never to commit yourself to something you are uncertain of.
