Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 75

Psalm 75[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A psalm of Asaph. A song.

1 We praise you, God,
    we praise you, for your Name is near;
    people tell of your wonderful deeds.

2 You say, “I choose the appointed time;
    it is I who judge with equity.
3 When the earth and all its people quake,
    it is I who hold its pillars firm.[b]
4 To the arrogant I say, ‘Boast no more,’
    and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horns.[c]
5 Do not lift your horns against heaven;
    do not speak so defiantly.’”

6 No one from the east or the west
    or from the desert can exalt themselves.
7 It is God who judges:
    He brings one down, he exalts another.
8 In the hand of the Lord is a cup
    full of foaming wine mixed with spices;
he pours it out, and all the wicked of the earth
    drink it down to its very dregs.

9 As for me, I will declare this forever;
    I will sing praise to the God of Jacob,
10 who says, “I will cut off the horns of all the wicked,
    but the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.”

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

My Dad was a big fan of Movies. As a teenager, he ushered in a movie theater in Boston, where he met my Mom. He learned the trade of Photography and Film Projection, which served him well in the Navy during WW2 and Korea. In the days before VCRs and DVDs, Dad showed Feature Films in our living room. Movie Nights included Popcorn, snacks, soft drinks and such films as "2001 a Space Odyssey", "The Great Race", and "It's a Mad,Mad,Mad, World". Hollywood was very much a part of my childhood.

One type of move, however, was NOT available in 16mm. These were the Disney Full-Length Cartoon Classics, like Pinocchio and Snow White. Dad explained why:

"Walt Disney had decided to release these Classics carefully, every seven years, and then return them to the vault until the next generation of children were old enough to enjoy them."

I remember anticipating each movie going into distribution at certain intervals, and the anticipation of seeing "Pinocchio"(1941), or "Snow White"(1938) for the first time. For a while, after the invention of VCRs and DVDs, Disney attempted to continue this policy, spacing out the release of the Early Classics. Now, however, these movies line the shelves in Thrift Stores and Yard sales. The Internet has made these movies commonplace.

In the Theater, the Cartoon Classics were always part of a Double Feature. However, because of the exclusivity of the Disney Contract, it had to be a Disney Movie. Because the Cartoon Classic had to be "special" the accompanying movie had to be considerably less "exciting" than the Main Feature. And so, "Snow White", Pinocchio", and "Cinderella" were nearly always preceded by a Nature Movie about The Olympic Elk or a Big Horn Sheep. Inevitably, there would be a big fight between two males to establish dominance, and we would watch the animals duke it out with their HORNS, in giant size living color. And that's what I always see in my head when the Bible uses the term "horns" to symbolize strength and power.

Like the Psalmist, Walt Disney derived his art from Nature. Throughout the millennia, the symbols remain the same.

I just shared with a friend a Disney movie, Return to Neverland (sequel to Peter Pan) about Jane, Wendy’s tomboy daughter.

It was the only Disney movie that I know of that took place during the London Blitz of World War II.
