Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 66

Psalm 66

For the director of music. A song. A psalm.

1 Shout for joy to God, all the earth!
2     Sing the glory of his name;
    make his praise glorious.
3 Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!
    So great is your power
    that your enemies cringe before you.
4 All the earth bows down to you;
    they sing praise to you,
    they sing the praises of your name.”[a]

5 Come and see what God has done,
    his awesome deeds for mankind!
6 He turned the sea into dry land,
    they passed through the waters on foot—
    come, let us rejoice in him.
7 He rules forever by his power,
    his eyes watch the nations—
    let not the rebellious rise up against him.

8 Praise our God, all peoples,
    let the sound of his praise be heard;
9 he has preserved our lives
    and kept our feet from slipping.
10 For you, God, tested us;
    you refined us like silver.
11 You brought us into prison
    and laid burdens on our backs.
12 You let people ride over our heads;
    we went through fire and water,
    but you brought us to a place of abundance.

13 I will come to your temple with burnt offerings
    and fulfill my vows to you—
14 vows my lips promised and my mouth spoke
    when I was in trouble.
15 I will sacrifice fat animals to you
    and an offering of rams;
    I will offer bulls and goats.

16 Come and hear, all you who fear God;
    let me tell you what he has done for me.
17 I cried out to him with my mouth;
    his praise was on my tongue.
18 If I had cherished sin in my heart,
    the Lord would not have listened;
19 but God has surely listened
    and has heard my prayer.
20 Praise be to God,
    who has not rejected my prayer
    or withheld his love from me!

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Fenway Park, Boston's Baseball Stadium is very old, and nestled among high-rise city buildings, so there is no way to enlarge its footprint. Originally seating a little over 30,000 people (until recent renovations added a few seats higher up), it could barely contain the passionate Boston Fans. Every seat for every game was filled, and one could always tell if it was a "Home Game" by the total lack of empty seats. Cities with larger Parks always seemed to have gaps in the seating. I don't think this was due to lack of enthusiasm on the part of the fans, but it's much easier to fill 30,000 seats than it is to fill 60,000. When the Park underwent renovations, the iconic seats ended up in Rec Rooms, Bars, Antique Stores, and restaurants all over New England. The seats have become collectors items.

Now, with games being played in socially-distanced stadiums due to COVID, empty seats glare balefully from behind Home Plate. It doesn't even look like Fenway Park anymore with those empty seats!

I imagine the empty seats affect the players' performance. As a musician, I have always endeavored to play as heartily for an audience of two as I would for 20,000, but it is not easy! Even though I practiced for hours with only Penny-The-Pitbull in attendance, something happens when there is an interaction between the performer and the audience. When an athlete makes an amazing play, or a soloist improvises an astounding solo, the audience erupts with praise. There is no "APPLAUSE" sign, no coach, and no coercion. It just happens!

God will be God whether we praise Him or not. However, when we contemplate His Glory, there is only one appropriate action, to Praise Him. Praise should always be the first phase of our prayer life. Questions, petitions, insights, contemplation, and meditation are all great kinds of prayer, but we Enter the Gates of Prayer with Praise, and it is always fitting!

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Tonight, I supplicate on behalf of Jerusalem, et al.

Psalm 47

To the leader. Of the Korahites. A Psalm.

1 Clap your hands, all you peoples;
shout to God with loud songs of joy.
2 For the Lord, the Most High, is awesome,
a great king over all the earth.
3 He subdued peoples under us,
and nations under our feet.
4 He chose our heritage for us,
the pride of Jacob whom he loves.
Selah

5 God has gone up with a shout,
the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.
6 Sing praises to God, sing praises;
sing praises to our King, sing praises.
7 For God is the king of all the earth;
sing praises with a psalm.*

8 God is king over the nations;
God sits on his holy throne.
9 The princes of the peoples gather
as the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
he is highly exalted.
