Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 59

Psalm 59[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” Of David. A miktam.[b] When Saul had sent men to watch David’s house in order to kill him.

1 Deliver me from my enemies, O God;
    be my fortress against those who are attacking me.
2 Deliver me from evildoers
    and save me from those who are after my blood.

3 See how they lie in wait for me!
    Fierce men conspire against me
    for no offense or sin of mine, Lord.
4 I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me.
    Arise to help me; look on my plight!
5 You, Lord God Almighty,
    you who are the God of Israel,
rouse yourself to punish all the nations;
    show no mercy to wicked traitors.[c]

6 They return at evening,
    snarling like dogs,
    and prowl about the city.
7 See what they spew from their mouths—
    the words from their lips are sharp as swords,
    and they think, “Who can hear us?”
8 But you laugh at them, Lord;
    you scoff at all those nations.

9 You are my strength, I watch for you;
    you, God, are my fortress,
10     my God on whom I can rely.

God will go before me
    and will let me gloat over those who slander me.
11 But do not kill them, Lord our shield,[d]
    or my people will forget.
In your might uproot them
    and bring them down.
12 For the sins of their mouths,
    for the words of their lips,
    let them be caught in their pride.
For the curses and lies they utter,
13     consume them in your wrath,
    consume them till they are no more.
Then it will be known to the ends of the earth
    that God rules over Jacob.

14 They return at evening,
    snarling like dogs,
    and prowl about the city.
15 They wander about for food
    and howl if not satisfied.
16 But I will sing of your strength,
    in the morning I will sing of your love;
for you are my fortress,
    my refuge in times of trouble.

17 You are my strength, I sing praise to you;
    you, God, are my fortress,
    my God on whom I can rely.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Forty years ago, I worked in a Christian Book Store. The store also sold Record Albums, Church Supplies, and Sunday School Materials. While the most popular framed picture for Sunday School walls was that of a Traditional Jesus Blessing the Children, there was another picture that caused some controversy, and even a bit of derision. It was a modern portrait of Jesus LAUGHING. The conservatives didn't like it because they thought it was "disrespectful", and the liberals didn't like it because they thought it was "corny".

While both side maybe had a point, the truth is that Jesus had a sense of humor. Many times, when engaged in a debate with a skeptic or a Pharisee, Jesus would say something ironic and genuinely funny that would leave the questioner speechless. The first time I read the Gospels all the way though, I actually had to stop once in a while to have a good laugh over some zinger that Jesus said that would stop a heckler in his tracks. It was the first century equivalent to a "Mike Drop".

OK, you may say, Jesus may have laughed, because He was Fully God and Fully Man. The Human part of Him would certainly be able to laugh, but what about the God of the Old Testament? Surely, He would never be caught laughing.

And yet, in at least two places God does laugh. The first instance is in Psalm 2, and the second is in this Psalm. Both times, God is Laughing, but not at a funny joke or an ironic turn of a phrase. In both Psalms God is Laughing AT his enemies, who are our enemies as well. It is not at evil that God laughs, but at the hubris of the enemy and the enemy's grandiose delusions of power. The enemy may be smart, but God is Omniscient. The enemy may be powerful, but God is Omnipotent. The enemy be be able to get around, but God is Omnipresent. There is no comparison. We KNOW Who will win in the end.

And that's no joke.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

Years ago, to keep Jane Fonda happy (!) every Easter, Ted Turner telecast "The Day Christ Died." Its opening scene is a rugby-like scrimmage and pileup, with Peter landing on Jesus. When Peter arises, Jesus, as a joke, plays dead.

That was my introduction to the concept of Jesus' humor, and I loved it. And the irony of his joke, especially leading off this film, has not escaped me.

The other day, I realized that God invented fun. The Bible's message is as serious as it gets, but for alert readers like you it also has many amusements--not least, as you wisely note, our assurance in the ultimate outcome, both for Jerusalem and personally: "He who laughs last...."

Amen !!! <><

Psalm 115

1 Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory,
for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness.
2 Why should the nations say,
‘Where is their God?’

3 Our God is in the heavens;
he does whatever he pleases.
4 Their idols are silver and gold,
the work of human hands.
5 They have mouths, but do not speak;
eyes, but do not see.
6 They have ears, but do not hear;
noses, but do not smell.
7 They have hands, but do not feel;
feet, but do not walk;
they make no sound in their throats.
8 Those who make them are like them;
so are all who trust in them.

9 O Israel, trust in the Lord!
He is their help and their shield.
10 O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord!
He is their help and their shield.
11 You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord!
He is their help and their shield.

12 The Lord has been mindful of us; he will bless us;
he will bless the house of Israel;
he will bless the house of Aaron;
13 he will bless those who fear the Lord,
both small and great.

14 May the Lord give you increase,
both you and your children.
15 May you be blessed by the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.

16 The heavens are the Lord’s heavens,
but the earth he has given to human beings.
17 The dead do not praise the Lord,
nor do any that go down into silence.
18 But we will bless the Lord
from this time on and for evermore.
Praise the Lord!
