Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 58

Psalm 58[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” Of David. A miktam.[b]

1 Do you rulers indeed speak justly?
    Do you judge people with equity?
2 No, in your heart you devise injustice,
    and your hands mete out violence on the earth.

3 Even from birth the wicked go astray;
    from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies.
4 Their venom is like the venom of a snake,
    like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears,
5 that will not heed the tune of the charmer,
    however skillful the enchanter may be.

6 Break the teeth in their mouths, O God;
    Lord, tear out the fangs of those lions!
7 Let them vanish like water that flows away;
    when they draw the bow, let their arrows fall short.
8 May they be like a slug that melts away as it moves along,
    like a stillborn child that never sees the sun.

9 Before your pots can feel the heat of the thorns—
    whether they be green or dry—the wicked will be swept away.[c]
10 The righteous will be glad when they are avenged,
    when they dip their feet in the blood of the wicked.
11 Then people will say,
    “Surely the righteous still are rewarded;
    surely there is a God who judges the earth.”

Footnotes 1. Psalm 58:1 In Hebrew texts 58:1-11 is numbered 58:2-12.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

For ten years, I sold items on Ebay. For the first few years, before I setup shipping software and a weighing scale, I had to bring all my packages to the Post Office and stand at the counter. One by one, the Postal Employee would weigh each item and ask a series of questions. Did I want to insure the package? What type of Postal Service did I want for the package? How many days did I want it to take? And, most importantly, Does the package contain any explosives, biological agents, poisons, controlled substances, toxic materials, or radioactive substances? (As If!). Anyway, I would try to expedite the process by saying "No" to all the questions for all the packages as a group, but that was not acceptable. And so, the trip to the Post Office was an Odyssey, and I had to allot at least an hour for the errand.

After I installed the software and plugged in the scale, I was able to pay for and print the postage, weigh the package, attach the stickers, and put a pile of boxes on the counter at the Post Office, no questions asked. It was worth the investment.

I can't help but wonder though, how asking some questions at a counter would deter a truly EVIL person from mailing evil things, and just lying about it? After all, the EVIL 9/11/01 Terrorists had lived in my community in South Florida, went to flight school, used the Public Library for their research, and worked out at the local gym. If they had been asked "Are you taking flying lessons, studying maps, and working out, so that you can hijack four aircraft full of innocent people and crash them into buildings?", I am certain the answer would have been "Of Course Not!"

Evil is very insidious and does not announce its arrival. When challenged, the evil person has no problem lying to cover up his intentions. The Psalmist compares evil people to a venomous snake that can't be charmed.

But the Psalm doesn't end there. God is Just, and evil will not flourish forever. God is our Refuge and Our Strength, and we can run to Him. The evil one will meet his end, like a slug shriveling up on a hot sidewalk. Justice (REAL Justice, not "social justice") will prevail.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Psalm 110

Of David. A Psalm.

1 The Lord says to my lord,
‘Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies your footstool.’

2 The Lord sends out from Zion
your mighty sceptre.
Rule in the midst of your foes.
3 Your people will offer themselves willingly
on the day you lead your forces
on the holy mountains.*
From the womb of the morning,
like dew, your youth* will come to you.
4 The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind,
‘You are a priest for ever according to the order of Melchizedek.’*

5 The Lord is at your right hand;
he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.
6 He will execute judgement among the nations,
filling them with corpses;
he will shatter heads
over the wide earth.
7 He will drink from the stream by the path;
therefore he will lift up his head.
