Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 28

Psalm 28

Of David.

1 To you, Lord, I call;
    you are my Rock,
    do not turn a deaf ear to me.
For if you remain silent,
    I will be like those who go down to the pit.
2 Hear my cry for mercy
    as I call to you for help,
as I lift up my hands
    toward your Most Holy Place.

3 Do not drag me away with the wicked,
    with those who do evil,
who speak cordially with their neighbors
    but harbor malice in their hearts.
4 Repay them for their deeds
    and for their evil work;
repay them for what their hands have done
    and bring back on them what they deserve.

5 Because they have no regard for the deeds of the Lord
    and what his hands have done,
he will tear them down
    and never build them up again.

6 Praise be to the Lord,
    for he has heard my cry for mercy.
7 The Lord is my strength and my shield;
    my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.
My heart leaps for joy,
    and with my song I praise him.

8 The Lord is the strength of his people,
    a fortress of salvation for his anointed one.
9 Save your people and bless your inheritance;
    be their shepherd and carry them forever.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

A Christian Pastor in Calgary (Canada), has been in the news recently for throwing health officials out of his church. The armed officials had raided the church service which was in progress, and attempted to shut it down because of COVID regulations.

The story seemed to confuse some readers, as the Canadian newspaper kept referring to the service as a celebration of the "Passover." Most of us would call "Passover" a Jewish Holiday, celebrated usually around the same time as the Christian Easter.

What Christians call "The Last Supper", immortalized in the Da Vinci mural of the same name, was actually a Passover Seder Meal. Jesus and His Disciples were all 1st Century Jews, and all four Gospels make it clear that they were observing the Holy Day in the way it was celebrated in those days. The ceremonial foods, unleavened bread and red wine, were blessed, broken, and shared in the traditional manner, but the Words spoken by Jesus changed everything. Without getting into theological arguments about what happens to the substance of the Bread and Wine, we can all agree that this was the origin of the Christian practice of Holy Communion. Even the sound of the word "Passover" is preserved in other European Languages in the word "Paschal". Other symbols of Passover, such as the Lamb, the Blood, the Unleavened bread, the Bitter Tears, and Freedom from Bondage, are all Easter symbols as well.

What has become a great divide over twenty centuries is really not that different after all.

Anyway, here is a Passover Story that some of you may have heard before, but we have some new folks on the Thread who haven't, so here goes:

Joey, my ten-year-old piano student, was starting to take Bar Mitzvah lessons to prepare for The Big Day 2-3 years hence. Joey loved movies, and he asked me if I knew any movies that would help him understand what being Jewish was all about. I immediately suggested “The Ten Commandments”, and recommended that he take two nights to watch it because it was very long.

The following week, I asked Joey if he had seen the movie.

“Oh yes! And I watched the whole thing in one night!,” was his reply.

They he mused, “I only have ONE question though.”

Being a Christian, I wondered if maybe his rabbi would be able to answer any deep questions Joey might have about his religion, but I took the plunge and asked Joey what his question was.

Here it is:

“WHAT WAS MOSES DOING ON THE PLANET OF THE APES?”

(Charlton Heston played the lead character in both movies!)

At the time, on "that other site", I had an internet friend who was working as a caregiver for Charlton Heston, who suffered from Alzheimer’s Disease. He shared Joey’s story, and Charlton got the joke right away, and laughed that wonderful hearty laugh of his.

It brightened his whole day!

Psalm 26

Of David.

1 Vindicate me, O Lord,
for I have walked in my integrity,
and I have trusted in the Lord without wavering.
2 Prove me, O Lord, and try me;
test my heart and mind.
3 For your steadfast love is before my eyes,
and I walk in faithfulness to you.*

4 I do not sit with the worthless,
nor do I consort with hypocrites;
5 I hate the company of evildoers,
and will not sit with the wicked.

6 I wash my hands in innocence,
and go around your altar, O Lord,
7 singing aloud a song of thanksgiving,
and telling all your wondrous deeds.

8 O Lord, I love the house in which you dwell,
and the place where your glory abides.
9 Do not sweep me away with sinners,
nor my life with the bloodthirsty,
10 those in whose hands are evil devices,
and whose right hands are full of bribes.

11 But as for me, I walk in my integrity;
redeem me, and be gracious to me.
12 My foot stands on level ground;
in the great congregation I will bless the Lord.

I mentioned this before. I was at an NRA convention in Reno in 2002. Back then Charlton Heston was the president and made an appearance. I met him briefly and his kissed my hand. Later, he got on stage and grasped an American Revolution era rifle and bellowed—”From my cold dead hands!”

Joining in prayer, left that other site, this Holocaust Memorial Day for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved America.

Amen.

But when anything is exposed and reproved by the light, it is made visible and clear; and where everything is visible and clear there is light.(Eph. 5:13)
