Persecuted evangelicals in Mexico help Traditionalist Catholics break free from pagan idolatry

Most Americans presume that Mexico is a Christian country, unaware that many Mexicans who identity as Catholic regularly practice a form of pagan idolatry, according to Universidad Cristiana de Mexico President Jaime Castro.

Castro leads an evangelical Christian university in Querétaro, Mexico. As Mexican Christians share the Gospel, they often face persecution from Mexican traditionalist Catholics, he told The Christian Post.

Unlike Christianity, traditionalist Catholicism relies on giving gifts to the gods in exchange for health, good fortune and protection from evil. They often participate in animal sacrifices to the gods and worship saints, incorporating practices from pagan Aztec beliefs.

“I was a pastor, and I have the experience to know some American Catholics. They weren’t like [Mexican Catholics]. The syncretism between Catholics that came to Mexico adopted every idol and every goddess [from the Aztec religion],” he said.

Here's one of those pagan gods, this one is "la Santa Muerte" or the death saint:

I believe it was Carlota, the wife of Maximilian, the short term Emperor of Mexico, who said that Mexico was not a Christian country but a Pagan country.

It is a calumny to describe these people as “traditionalist” Catholics. Traditional Catholicism rejects Aztec idolatry.

That is obviously a man’s skull, so Mexican Catholics also enjoy cross-dressing corpses.

I would hardly consider this syncretistic religion to be called “Traditionalist Catholicism”.

So, "street Catholicism"? "Folk Catholicism"?

The folks, despite outward appearances, have nothing to do with Catholicism. Everything that they do is condemned by the Catholic Church. Their use of Catholic symbols was in order to hide form the true Catholic Church. To associate these pagans in any way with true Catholicism is a cheep shot and a violation of the Commandment: “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.” An honest person would remove such a false article once the truth has been pointed out.

Exactly. These are indigenous folk quasi-religious cults, nothing more.

Traditional Catholicism is an entirely different thing.

The thread needs to be deleted.

I think the last line makes it clear that Mexican Catholics are different from regular Catholics. Don’t you?

“I was a pastor, and I have the experience to know some American Catholics. They weren’t like [Mexican Catholics]. The syncretism between Catholics that came to Mexico adopted every idol and every goddess [from the Aztec religion],” he said.

These are not Mexican Catholics. I know many Catholics who have come from Mexico and they stay away from this stuff. These are pagans plain and simple. They just hid their paganism under Catholic forms since Mexico, at least historically, has been so overwhelmingly Catholic and outright paganism would not be socially acceptable. Today with Mexico becoming more secular, like the United States, they can be more open about their pagan practices. These practices have nothing to do with Catholicism. An honest person would acknowledge this.

They are "cryptoCatholics," but in Catholicism who ultimately decides who is a valid church member and fit to have a ecclesiastical funeral, the laity as you or the pope? And do you really think your pope would excommunicate RCs like as he would Ted Kennedy?

Edit. These are pseudoCatholics not “cryptoCatholics” but Francis would likely pray with them.
