Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Lambs, Sheep, and Shepherds

.

1 Chronicles 21:14-22-20

14 So the Lord sent a plague on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell dead. 15 And God sent an angel to destroy Jerusalem. But as the angel was doing so, the Lord saw it and relented concerning the disaster and said to the angel who was destroying the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand.” The angel of the Lord was then standing at the threshing floor of Araunah[a] the Jebusite.

16 David looked up and saw the angel of the Lord standing between heaven and earth, with a drawn sword in his hand extended over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell facedown.

17 David said to God, “Was it not I who ordered the fighting men to be counted? I, the shepherd,[b] have sinned and done wrong. These are but sheep. What have they done? Lord my God, let your hand fall on me and my family, but do not let this plague remain on your people.”

David Builds an Altar

18 Then the angel of the Lord ordered Gad to tell David to go up and build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. 19 So David went up in obedience to the word that Gad had spoken in the name of the Lord.

20 While Araunah was threshing wheat, he turned and saw the angel; his four sons who were with him hid themselves. 21 Then David approached, and when Araunah looked and saw him, he left the threshing floor and bowed down before David with his face to the ground.

22 David said to him, “Let me have the site of your threshing floor so I can build an altar to the Lord, that the plague on the people may be stopped. Sell it to me at the full price.”

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Back in the Exodus, God told Moses to take a census. This was to specify the number of Fighting Men available by Tribal Affiliation. God also gave Moses instructions as to the arrangement of the campgrounds by family, surrounding the Tabernacle. God had specific reasons for this census, and Moses was being obedient in his compliance.

When Gideon took a census of his fighting men, it was in preparation for a war. 30,000 soldiers is a respectable, but not huge, army. I can easily visualize 30,000 people because it was the approximate seating capacity of Boston's Fenway Park, before they added more seats. It was not that big of an army. Yet, God told Gideon to send all the "timid" soldiers home, so he was left with a third of that number. Then God used a strange "Water-Lapping-Test" to further reduce the force to a mere 300 men. And those 300, with God's help and a clever strategy, won the day.

In the lead-up to today's Scripture Passage, David takes a census of his army. This was not due to a command of God, and he was advised NOT to do it. Here was a perfect example of a neutral act (taking a census) being either a proper act or a sinful one.

"What's the Difference?" you may ask. I remember pondering the same thing myself upon my first reading of this story. Moses took a census, Gideon took a census, and now, David was taking a census. Baby Jesus was born in Bethlehem BECAUSE of a census, and I fill out forms every couple of years in the American Census. How can that be a sin?

The sin crept into David's census because he did it on his own out of pride and stubbornness. It was as if he didn't trust God to be with him in battle. He was trying to "hedge his bets" with the Creator of the Universe! Even his less "spiritual" advisors warned him against it. Although David was "a Man After God's Own Heart", his pride, distrust, and stubbornness were a direct affront to the Almighty.

David was given a choice of three punishments for his sin. He could be invaded by foreigners, experience a drought, or be chastised by God directly. Rather than allowing his nation to undergo invasion or drought, David chose "Door Number Three".

"Door Number Three" was a PLAGUE! Ugh! David began to see his own people getting sick and dying all around him. He pleaded with God that HE as the chief SHEPHERD, was the one who deserved punishment, and the people were only sheep. David, at that point, took responsibility for his own sin, and the plague stopped.

What follows is the Real Estate Deal that secured the Threshing Floor of Auraunah. A threshing floor had to he located in a high, flat place, so that when the wheat is crushed, the chaff (which is lighter than the healthy kernels) is blown away by the wind. David saw a vision of an angel, stopping the plague, right over this expansive place. Auraunah was quite willing to GIVE the parcel of land to David, but David refused to take something for God that didn't cost him anything. And so, we have all the elements of a legal transfer of property which is still in use today:

Seller: Auraunah
BUYER:King David
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROPERTY: The Parcel known as "Aurounah's Threshing Floor, on the elevation in Jerusalem
PRICE PAID: Fifty Shekels of Silver
Duly recorded in TWO places in the Bible: 2 Samuel 24 and 1 Chronicles 21.

And, I would like to mention that Moses, Gideon, and David were ALL Shepherds!

[Censustakers] Moses, Gideon, and David were ALL Shepherds!

Well-noticed! Seems to me that all competent shepherds must constantly be taking censi of their flocks. How else will they know to leave the 99? And the Good Shepherd will be taking a census at the Great White-Throned Judgment.

This same Shepherd is also constantly monitoring the health of the members of his flock, including their prayer life; and so I offer a resounding Baaaaamen!

Thirty-two years ago, a shepherd grazed his flock in a dry creek near our home. My nine-year-old daughter brought home a cute lamb that had strayed and wanted to keep it, only to learn the hard fact that the lamb needed its mother.

Amen !!! <><

Psalm 122

A Song of Ascents. Of David.

1 I was glad when they said to me,
‘Let us go to the house of the Lord!’
2 Our feet are standing
within your gates, O Jerusalem.

3 Jerusalem—built as a city
that is bound firmly together.
4 To it the tribes go up,
the tribes of the Lord,
as was decreed for Israel,
to give thanks to the name of the Lord.
5 For there the thrones for judgement were set up,
the thrones of the house of David.

6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
‘May they prosper who love you.
7 Peace be within your walls,
and security within your towers.’
8 For the sake of my relatives and friends
I will say, ‘Peace be within you.’
9 For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,
I will seek your good.
