Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Lambs, Sheep, and Shepherds

.

Isaiah 53

Who has believed our message

    and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot,
    and like a root out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
    nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected by mankind,
    a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.
Like one from whom people hide their faces
    he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.
4 Surely he took up our pain
    and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
    stricken by him, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
    and by his wounds we are healed.
6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
    each of us has turned to our own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed and afflicted,
    yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
    and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
    so he did not open his mouth.
8 By oppression[a] and judgment he was taken away.
    Yet who of his generation protested?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;
    for the transgression of my people he was punished.[b]
9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked,
    and with the rich in his death,
though he had done no violence,
    nor was any deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
    and though the Lord makes[c] his life an offering for sin,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
    and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.
11 After he has suffered,
    he will see the light of life[d] and be satisfied[e];
by his knowledge[f] my righteous servant will justify many,
    and he will bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,[g]
    and he will divide the spoils with the strong,[h]
because he poured out his life unto death,
    and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,
    and made intercession for the transgressors.

Footnotes

New International Version (NIV)(End of Scripture Passage)

The Amazing 53rd Chapter of Isaiah is filled with Imagery of Sheep…both in the description of The Lamb of God, and we ourselves, who, like sheep, have gone astray.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD, Our God!
Sanctified and Holy is Your Most Hallowed Name.
How Excellent,
How Wonderful,
How Perfect You Are!
My heart is Overwhelmed With Your Glory,
Your Magnificence,
and Your Power!
When I think of how Awesome You Are,
Of How You Transcend Time and Space,
Of How You Created Everything That Is and Ever Was,
Of How You Tell History
From the Beginning to The End
and the End to The Beginning,
Of How You Give us a Glimpse into Your Infinite Mind
through Your Holy and Unchanging Word,
How You Are Faithful To Your Promises
Even When We Fall Away,
And How You Fulfill Every Detail of Your Precepts,
When we ourselves fall so short of the target,
I just have to stop everything,
And say, "How Great and AWESOME YOU ARE!"

LORD, We Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Beseech You on Behalf of Our Captive Brethren,
Christians and Jews,
In Bondage in Hostile lands.

We Pray For Our President,
And other Leaders of Our Beloved USA
May They Receive Wisdom from You
To do the Right Thing.
We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

This Portion of Handel's Messiah sometimes causes great hilarity among vocal students. George Fredrick Handel was German, and his first language (German) often sticks words together without commas or even SPACES. And so, the KJV words from Isaiah, "All we, like sheep, have gone astray..." comes out as "ALL we like SHEEP!" and is repeated a few times before we get the "astray" part. It becomes very difficult to herd a bunch of giggling students singing about liking sheep.

Upon deeper listening, we hear the instruments pumping out an insistent pattern, like little feet that sound (to me anyway) like sheep trotting around all over the place...in other words, straying, each one going his own way. It takes a good shepherd, armed with his staff, and maybe even a few sheepdogs to keep these crazy, straying, sheep in line. Just for your amusement, Check This Out. It shows what can be done when a shepherd REALLY knows what he is doing.

In spite of the giggles, the choir continues in its crazy "straying" trotting around, seemingly going its own way, when suddenly the music changes. Together the choir sings slowly and in perfect coordination:

"The Lord laid upon Him the iniquity of us all."

The entire piece is like a painting made of musical notes, something for which Handel was famous. "The Messiah" is full of moments like this.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Psalm 52

To the leader. A Maskil of David, when Doeg the Edomite came to Saul and said to him, ‘David has come to the house of Ahimelech.’

1 Why do you boast, O mighty one,
of mischief done against the godly?*
All day long 2you are plotting destruction.
Your tongue is like a sharp razor,
you worker of treachery.
3 You love evil more than good,
and lying more than speaking the truth.
Selah
4 You love all words that devour,
O deceitful tongue.

5 But God will break you down for ever;
he will snatch and tear you from your tent;
he will uproot you from the land of the living.
Selah
6 The righteous will see, and fear,
and will laugh at the evildoer,* saying,
7 ‘See the one who would not take
refuge in God,
but trusted in abundant riches,
and sought refuge in wealth!’*

8 But I am like a green olive tree
in the house of God.
I trust in the steadfast love of God
for ever and ever.
9 I will thank you for ever,
because of what you have done.
In the presence of the faithful
I will proclaim* your name, for it is good.

Isaiah 52:13-53:12 has been referred to as the funeral song of the suffering Servant. Had no one ever known by whom, or when, this was written, Theological scholars would argue it had to be penned by one who was present at the time of Christ’s abuse at the hands of the Roman’s whips, and His ultimate death on the cross. For there is but one brow this crown of thorns could fit. That of our Lord and Savior, Jesus The Christ.

About 700 years later, this passage became the door for which Phillip was able to share the Gospel with an Ethiopian eunuch on the road leaving Jerusalem. Acts 8:25-40

How many Times has the Gospel accounts taken a man to his knees? Well, long before any Gospel was penned, Isaiah’s account of Christ’s suffering helped convert a man of great authority under The Queen of the Ethiopians.

So many Christians today claim they find it difficult to share the Gospel. When all they have to do is strike up a conversation with the desire to do so, and the Holy Spirit will open the door for them.

Praise God,

Merry Christmas.

I agree. The fugue "He trusted in Him to deliver" sounds just like a picture of a nasty mob of mockers. There are other parts just like that as well.

Oh...by the way, I still have my "free tickets" to Messiah from last year when Marie and I drove all the way down to Middleboro and found out it was cancelled. They gave us free tickets for THIS year's performance, which was, of course, also cancelled.
