Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Lambs, Sheep, and Shepherds

.

Psalm 95

Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord;
    let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
2 Let us come before him with thanksgiving
    and extol him with music and song.
3 For the Lord is the great God,
    the great King above all gods.
4 In his hand are the depths of the earth,
    and the mountain peaks belong to him.
5 The sea is his, for he made it,
    and his hands formed the dry land.

6 Come, let us bow down in worship,
    let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;
7 for he is our God
    and we are the people of his pasture,
    the flock under his care.

Today, if only you would hear his voice,
8 “Do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah,[a]
    as you did that day at Massah[b] in the wilderness,
9 where your ancestors tested me;
    they tried me, though they had seen what I did.
10 For forty years I was angry with that generation;
    I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts go astray,
    and they have not known my ways.’
11 So I declared on oath in my anger,
    ‘They shall never enter my rest.’”

Footnotes

1. Psalm 95:8 Meribah means quarreling.
2. Psalm 95:8 Massah means testing.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

If you haven't yet visited Hebrews 11:6's Bible Art Thread, I highly recommend it. There was a picture in today's collection that prompted an "olfactory memory".

Actually, I have three stories for you today that are related.

1. Little Gail's Lamb: As I have shared with you before, I grew up in an urban setting, where the only horse I ever saw was the unfortunate puller of the Ragman's cart. And so, I was unprepared for the new "aroma" that emanated from my friend Gail's back yard. Gail and I were seven, and we were walking back to her house after Sunday School. "What's that awful SMELL?" I asked. "That's my little lamb," Gail answered. "Daddy bought me a lamb! He's so CUTE!" I had heard of dogs and cats as pets, but never lambs. And since Gail's family were recent immigrants from War-Torn Europe (where the chilren were starving so clean your plate!), I figured they had different customs than we did. So OK. But it sure SMELLED.

The following Sunday was Easter, and we didn't have Sunday School. A week later, I saw Gail and asked her how her lamb was.

"Oh, him." Gail said. "We ate him for dinner Easter Sunday."

She seemed OK with it, but I was traumatized! Whenever I smell lamb, I think of this story!

2. Hezekiah's Wall: In 1984, my late husband and I spent three weeks in Jerusalem. After seeing all the things that were tourist favorites, we began to look deeper and started to explore the recent Archaeological discoveries. The area South of the Temple Mount had some awesome digs, as well as the Old City. Jerusalem has been destroyed and rebuilt many times in its History, with new construction atop the old rubble, and so has gotten higher over thousands of years. This layer cake of civilizations is called a Tel, or "hill". Some of the most amazing finds are 50 feet below Jerusalem's bustling streets.

In the deepest part of these digs is a funky smell. It is cloyingly sweet, like too many flowers at a funeral, and a little rotten, like a bad hunk of Brie. I have no idea what causes it, but it was present in every dig that was 45 feet down or deeper. I never smelled anything like it elsewhere. I smelled it at Hezekiah's Wall (45 feet down under the Old City), in the Water Tunnel, and a few other digs around Jerusalem. When I saw the picture of Hezekiah's Wall in Today's Bible Art Thread, my brain recalled the smell of the place, and inspired Today's Stories.

3. The Rose of Jerusalem One of the things we did in Jerusalem was participate in a Glorious Praise March that went all the way from the Mount of Olives to The Western Wall. Along the way, people cheered us on and a little boy gave me a rose, which I promptly stuck between the pages of a small King James Bible. When we arrived at the huge plaza near The Wall, we had some guest speakers. One of them, from the International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem, gave a rousing speech about recognizing Jerusalem as the True Capital City of Israel. He urged governments to move their embassies there, because it was the right thing to do. This caused me to launch my own little prayer mission that the US would do this simple thing. My prayer continued through the administrations of five US Presidents, until finally, God used President Trump to answer my prayer.

Upon entry back into my own country, we were asked if we had any farm products, animals, seeds, etc. This is to protect American Agriculture from foreign plagues. Hubby and I had nothing to declare and we came home with suitcases full of memories. About ten years later, I happened to find the little KJV that had lain at the bottom of my purse, unopened since the trip. It smelled like Hezekiah's Wall! I opened the book, and there, on Psalm 23, all dried up, was the Rose.

I felt a little guilty, hoping I hadn't infected the entire country with the Rose, but since there had been no outbreaks of deadly rose diseases in the 36 years since arriving from Jerusalem, I guess it's OK.

We are very cognizant of the Senses of Sight and Hearing, but often do not credit the sense of smell with anything important. Until 2020, most of us have taken the Sense of Smell for granted. But something has happened. One of the weirdest symptoms of COVID 19 is the loss of the Sense of Smell.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Amen, left that other site

Smell does bring back many strong memories. The smell of an old woodshed brings me back to my grandmother’s woodshed.

And it was so important in worship.

Joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved America.
