THE TABERNACLE

. .

GOD’S PORTABLE TEMPLE

. .

From the Hebrew word “miškan”—pronounced as “mishkan”

Strong’s translation is “dwelling place, tabernacle”, with “tabernacle”
the preferred translation of most English Bibles

Merriam-Webster’s derivation of tabernacle:
“Middle English, from Anglo-French, from Late Latin tabernaculum,
from Latin, tent, from taberna hut”

SO, "TABERNACLE" IS JUST A FANCY NAME FOR "TENT"

. .

1 Then the Lord said to Moses: 2 “Set up the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, on the first day of the first month. 3 Place the ark of the covenant law in it and shield the ark with the curtain. 4 Bring in the table and set out what belongs on it. Then bring in the lampstand and set up its lamps. 5 Place the gold altar of incense in front of the ark of the covenant law and put the curtain at the entrance to the tabernacle.

6 “Place the altar of burnt offering in front of the entrance to the tabernacle, the tent of meeting; 7 place the basin between the tent of meeting and the altar and put water in it. 8 Set up the courtyard around it and put the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard.

9 “Take the anointing oil and anoint the tabernacle and everything in it; consecrate it and all its furnishings, and it will be holy. 10 Then anoint the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils; consecrate the altar, and it will be most holy. 11 Anoint the basin and its stand and consecrate them.

12 “Bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance to the tent of meeting and wash them with water. 13 Then dress Aaron in the sacred garments, anoint him and consecrate him so he may serve me as priest. 14 Bring his sons and dress them in tunics. 15 Anoint them just as you anointed their father, so they may serve me as priests. Their anointing will be to a priesthood that will continue throughout their generations.” 16 Moses did everything just as the Lord commanded him.

17 So the tabernacle was set up on the first day of the first month in the second year. 18 When Moses set up the tabernacle, he put the bases in place, erected the frames, inserted the crossbars and set up the posts. 19 Then he spread the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering over the tent, as the Lord commanded him.

20 He took the tablets of the covenant law and placed them in the ark, attached the poles to the ark and put the atonement cover over it. 21 Then he brought the ark into the tabernacle and hung the shielding curtain and shielded the ark of the covenant law, as the Lord commanded him.

22 Moses placed the table in the tent of meeting on the north side of the tabernacle outside the curtain 23 and set out the bread on it before the Lord, as the Lord commanded him.

24 He placed the lampstand in the tent of meeting opposite the table on the south side of the tabernacle 25 and set up the lamps before the Lord, as the Lord commanded him.

26 Moses placed the gold altar in the tent of meeting in front of the curtain 27 and burned fragrant incense on it, as the Lord commanded him.

28 Then he put up the curtain at the entrance to the tabernacle. 29 He set the altar of burnt offering near the entrance to the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, and offered on it burnt offerings and grain offerings, as the Lord commanded him.

30 He placed the basin between the tent of meeting and the altar and put water in it for washing, 31 and Moses and Aaron and his sons used it to wash their hands and feet. 32 They washed whenever they entered the tent of meeting or approached the altar, as the Lord commanded Moses.

33 Then Moses set up the courtyard around the tabernacle and altar and put up the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard. And so Moses finished the work.

34 Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 35 Moses could not enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

36 In all the travels of the Israelites, whenever the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle, they would set out; 37 but if the cloud did not lift, they did not set out—until the day it lifted. 38 So the cloud of the Lord was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the Israelites during all their travels.

Again, here is the Bing page " TABERNACLE IN ART”,
showing various painters' and sculptors’ conceptions.
Several shown here are serious works worthy of interest,
by unknown artists except as noted.

NOTES ON THE COMPLETELY SUBJECTIVE SELECTION CRITERIA

Works need not be true masterpieces to qualify for inclusion here—
they don’t need to be housed at the Louvre nor auctioned by Sotheby’s.
They only need to successfully illustrate some aspect of the Biblical text
or, frankly, simply tickle my fancy, which I pray is guided by the Holy Spirit.

The pace may seem glacial to those eager for the next dramatic event.
My commission is to search for art on each Bible passage in sequence;
if I find enough, then it becomes the next installment, even if undramatic.

Thank you for your understanding.

At the Holy Spirit's prompting, I am surveying "Bible art" to give God glory, as many of these artists have done, and for my own amusement and learning; and I thought others might enjoy it and be blessed by it, too. My plan is to proceed methodically from left-to right, Genesis to Revelation, as the Lord wills. Back soon with another.

The Bible encourages us to meditate on it (Ps. 1:1-3, 119:11-16, etc.); these artists have done so, and their works can assist us and enrich our own thoughts about biblical characters, incidents and concepts, and increase our faith in He who is behind it all. As you encounter and consider these images and the related Scriptures and the Spirit enlightens your understanding, please share it with us!

But it is not only oil-on-canvas that can so help us; I refer to the astonishing video series The Chosen, which strolls through the four Gospels at the most leisurely pace. The eight episodes of Season 1 are finished, and the second of a planned seven seasons is coming soon. I say "leisurely" because after an entire year’s viewing Jesus still has only seven of the apostles (although He's preparing to call up Thomas from the minor leagues--but Thomas is skeptical, of course). Anticipating a canvas of fifty-plus hours instead of a movie's paltry two hours, The Chosen turns the characters (especially including Jesus!) into three-dimensional humans and brings the Gospels alive--you have never seen anything even remotely like it! Here is the Official Trailer.

Here is a link for free viewing of The Chosen: “Works with your phone, tablet, and you can cast to your Roku or Chromecast.” Last fall I paid $34.98 for DVDs and ongoing internet access—best 35 bucks I’ve ever spent (I don’t recall how much our marriage license cost, but then it was 42 years ago).

I sang in Billy Graham’s Choir when he had a Crusade in Boston back in the 80’s. Cliff Barrows was the choir director, and I learned vocal stuff that I have never forgotten and continue to use in my teaching of Voice.

I traveled to and from the Crusade on a Honda CB350 Motorcycle with my little sister clinging on the back...and it rained every night.

THOUSANDS of Bostonians came to the Lord during that wonderful week that I will never forget.

And we were under the stars in Nickerson Field...original home of the Boston Braves, but now part of Boston University...and it was one of the most memorable weeks in my entire life.

What a lovely memory for you. Incredible numbers of people share such wonderful memories of weeks with Billy. Greg Laurie has very capably carried that torch in recent years.

We had a tent revival in our small town . . . I was probably about 8 or 9 years old but I do have a lasting memory of it. I have the hymn book they sold somewhere around here. The town was dry back then and these days instead of a revival tent, the mayor who is known for his imbibing brings in a beer tent every fall festival. . . ain’t gonna happen this year. . .the festival has been called off.

What a nice memory for you. I take it you didn’t get saved then, because you’d have mentioned it.

I was saved in a Baptist Church at age 8. We had moved to town when I was in second grade. . .my Dad had to work away to keep us on the farm. . . after trying out the various churches in town,it was after my third grade teacher invited us to the local Baptist Church that we made our decision. We didn’t know it then, but my Grandma and Aunt who lived in another town were praying feverishly that we would decide on the Baptist Church which we did. My brother, sister, and I have been blessed.

Fabulous! Thanks so very much for sharing your personal story and testimony. Once God opens our eyes, how much fun it is to watch Him working.

Don't know if you've heard this, but Christian researchers cannot find anyone who is saved who was not prayed into the kingdom. In your case it was your feverishly-praying Grandma and Aunt. In mine it was my Grandma and my employer (!)--I was 28. But that's just the people we know of.

One of the very most fascinating aspects of heaven will be when God reveals all the millions of ways He blessed us, not least how He worked through others for our salvation. Knowing that makes me pray fervently for others, even people I encounter whom I never actually meet.
