The Prisoner of the Vatican

The Prisoner of the Vatican

In one of his last speeches before abdicating in 2013, Pope Benedict XVI decried the liberalism that had seeped into the Church after Vatican II. To this liberalism, he traced “so many problems, so much misery, in reality: seminaries closed, convents closed, the liturgy was trivialized.” But he then proceeded to hand the Church to the very liberals responsible for these problems and to a successor set upon liberalizing the Church even more.

Not long after assuming power, Jorge Bergoglio took a veiled swipe at his predecessor. He told an interviewer that Vatican II had encouraged openness to “modern culture” but that “very little was done in that direction,” a shortcoming he promised to correct: “I have the humility and ambition to want to do something.”

Modernized the convent and all the real nuns fled. I remember that well.

Two questions:

One, why did Benedict resign? I’ve never seen any real explanation of this and he’s still alive, so what gives?

Two, what am I to make of Neumayr who recently was advising all to read the ‘approved’ publications and not things like The Church Militant?

This is how I feel about Francis - even if what he wanted to do was 100% great, I would still oppose it if he supported it. He has come across like a snake at every turn.

That wasn't George Neumayr. It was George Weigel.

Big difference between the two.

“One, why did Benedict resign?”

Bennedict resigned for imminent health reasons OVER SIX YEARS AGO.

My pet theory is that Benedict, someone who never like the job in the first place, was pressured and/or duped into resigning. Someone, perhaps Ganswein, convinced him that the Vatileaks scandal and the banking issues that the Holy See was having at time were too much for him and that a younger, orthodox successor was waiting in the wings and could succeed where he could not. I honestly don’t believe that he would have handed over the keys to the gang now running things (the very enemies he tangled with over doctrine and practices for decades) if he had really understood that he was doing just that.

Oh gosh! Thank you! I wonder how long I’ve been confusing these two! Thank you!

Yep. My wife is on the verge of severing all ties with this church.

Tell her, PLEASE don't! The EUCHARIST is the Church, NOT the pope. We can withstand this turmoil. We can do without the pope, but we can't do without the Eucharist (Jesus). I'll be praying for you both.
