Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Music in The Bible)

Psalm 50

Psalm 50

A psalm of Asaph.

1 The Mighty One, God, the Lord,
    speaks and summons the earth
from the rising of the sun to where it sets.
2 From Zion, perfect in beauty,
    God shines forth.
3 Our God comes
    and will not be silent;
a fire devours before him,
and around him a tempest rages.
4 He summons the heavens above,
and the earth, that he may judge his people:
5 “Gather to me this consecrated people,
who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.”
6 And the heavens proclaim his righteousness,
for he is a God of justice.[a][b]

7 “Listen, my people, and I will speak;
I will testify against you, Israel:
    I am God, your God.
8 I bring no charges against you concerning your sacrifices
or concerning your burnt offerings, which are ever before me.
9 I have no need of a bull from your stall
or of goats from your pens,
10 for every animal of the forest is mine,
and the cattle on a thousand hills.
11 I know every bird in the mountains,
and the insects in the fields are mine.
12 If I were hungry I would not tell you,
for the world is mine, and all that is in it.
13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls
or drink the blood of goats?

14 “Sacrifice thank offerings to God,
fulfill your vows to the Most High,
15 and call on me in the day of trouble;
I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”

16 But to the wicked person, God says:

“What right have you to recite my laws
or take my covenant on your lips?
17 You hate my instruction
and cast my words behind you.
18 When you see a thief, you join with him;
you throw in your lot with adulterers.
19 You use your mouth for evil
and harness your tongue to deceit.
20 You sit and testify against your brother
and slander your own mother’s son.
21 When you did these things and I kept silent,
you thought I was exactly[c] like you.
But I now arraign you
and set my accusations before you.

22 “Consider this, you who forget God,
or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you:
23 Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me,
and to the blameless[d] I will show my salvation.”

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

HE mighty God, even the LORD, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof.

2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined.
3 Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him.

4 He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people.

5 Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.

6 And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself. Selah.

7 Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against thee: I am God, even thy God.

8 I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices or thy burnt offerings, to have been continually before me.

9 I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he goats out of thy folds.

10 For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.

11 I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine.

12 If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.

13 Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?

14 Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High:

15 And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

16 But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth?

17 Seeing thou hatest instruction, and casteth my words behind thee.

18 When thou sawest a thief, then thou consentedst with him, and hast been partaker with adulterers.

19 Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit.

20 Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother's son.

21 These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes.

22 Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.

23 Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The style of this Psalm is a little different from the ones preceding it, and we see that it is titled "A Psalm of Asaph". It has a "didactic" tone, like a little sermon in a song.

Even though it is different than many other Psalms, it still follows a literary structure that is very common in Hebrew Literature. We have already spoken of "contrasting couplets". The "chiastic structure" of may Psalms takes this literary device even further.

The structure of a chiastic song in its simplest form is ABBA. Of course most Psalms are more complex than this. Here is a silly little poem that I am composing on the spot to show how the chiastic structure works:

I stood at the base of the mountain high
Its craggy peaks reached to the sky.
A rickety bridge guarded by a troll,
Refused my entrance lest I pay the toll.
Then I proceeded to climb to the top,
And only looked up, lest I fear the drop,
Reaching the Peak, I donned my crown,
But Then I knew it was time to go down.
Carefully stepping over each rocky crag,
Going up was fun, coming down is a drag.
I had barely enough to pay the toll
At the rickety bridge guarded by the troll.
I looked back at the peak and wished I could fly
As I stood at the base of the mountain high.

OK, it needs work, but I think you get the picture! Now that you know how the chiastic structure works, I am sure you will see it cropping up again in the study of Psalms as MUSIC.

Now as you are recovering from my attempt at chiastic poetry, I have three little stories to share that relate specifically to today's Psalm:

1. Academia. Although I went to the Boston Public Schools in the 50's and 60's, they weren't as bad as people make them out to be. In fact, from the Fourth Grade onward, the schools made an attempt to channel the more gifted students into a College-Prep-Classical style education that would take them all the way through from 7th Grade to Senior year. This eliminated the usual course through Junior High and High School, and the sexes were segregated to encourage studying rather than "dating". One had to take a strict test to get in, it was free, and of course I was groomed to enroll. I hated it...Latin and Math, no Art or Music courses, and NO BOYFRIENDS! Yuck. But I stuck it out for two years and eventually left to enroll in regular High School. Anyway, the feminists and progressives didn't like the idea that the girls and boys were separated, claiming that the academic standards at the boys' school were higher than at the girls' school, and the girls' school was shut down, gutted, and eventually turned into Housing for the Elderly. So much for my Alma Mater.

2. Big Business When I was 17, I got my first real job as an Overseas Operator on the Night Shift for New England Telephone and Telegraph Co (Ma Bell) in an Art-Deco Skyscraper at 185 Franklin St. in Downtown Boston. Although the upper floors were a grim warren of switchboards and banks of desks, the lobby was wonderful. A wraparound mural of the "History of Telecommunications" done by artists during the Great Depression, told the story of Alexander Graham Bell, and how America was united by cable and wire to become a great world power. It was a really nice painting, and surrounded you as you walked across the marble floor to the bank of elevators. Off to one side, you could peak into a full size model of Alexander Graham Bell's garret workshop with animatronic figures inventing the first telephone. It was so cool. But...Ma Bell was a monopoly, albeit a regulated one, so it had to go. Through various incarnations (New England Tel, NYNEX, Bell Atlantic etc) the once monolithic giant struggled to maintain its identity. This is, of course, an oversimplification, but when cell phones came out, it was the beginning of the end. The last time I was in the building about a year ago, the painting was gone, the garret was gone, and even the address was changed from 185 Franklin St to a "Post Office Square" address. Gone with the wind, as they say.

3. Medicine Yet another job in my crazy past was "Recreation Director" at a small Nursing and Rehab Facility that was founded by a Great Jewish Philanthropist. Because it was a Charitable Institution, donors provided much of the funds to run the facility. Every building, every room, every clock, every stick of furniture, had a little bronze plaque with the name of the donor on it. It was a little weird. But anyway, I worked there until I finally decided to become self-employed as a Music Therapist. A few years had gone by, and I was hired to play at the facility. However, in the meantime, it had been taken over by one of Boston's BIGGEST Medical Centers. So now it was no longer a Kosher Facility, nor was it considered a "Charity". ALL the names of the buildings were changed, all the decor and furniture changed, all the plaques removed, and all memory of the facility's former identity erased.

This Psalm tells us of how people seek immortality through providing money, grants, buildings, scholarships, trusts, medical and educational institutions, inventions, businesses, and so on. But, although these are all good things, there is no way ANY of it can redeem a soul. That is just too costly.

But, in the chiastic structure of this Psalm, as we come down the side of the mountain, we have the answer. "But God will redeem my life from the grave."
