The advice "when in Rome, do as the Romans do" goes back to St. Ambrose.

Monica, the mother of Augustine, was unsure if, when she was in Rome, she should fast on the days the Romans fasted, or fast on the days the people in her home town fasted. St. Ambrose told her that when he was in Rome, he fasted on the days the Romans did.

How refreshing, from the perspective of a Lutheran pastor, to see a post on this very day concerning St. Ambrose, whose name belongs to my youngest son on the day of his birth. Christopher Ambrose is my son’s name. He has a touch of autism, quietist kid I’ve ever known, but he is baptized into the Name and knows it.

“A man defiled by sin is not worthy”

That’s...everyone.
That’s the point of Christianity.

So I guess King David is out. Perhaps the Apostle Paul when he was known as Saul.

The first recorded instance of someone reading silently was by Augustine of Hippo, who came into a room and found Ambrose silently reading to himself. Until that time reading was done out loud.
