Some 20 million fewer households donate to charity than they did two decades ago
Fewer Americans are giving money to charity, and their relationship with God may have something to do with it.
The share of U.S. adults who donated to charity dropped significantly between 2000 and 2016, according to an analysis released this month from the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and Vanguard Charitable.
By 2016, just over half — 53% — of Americans gave money to charity, down from 66% in 2000. That figure held mostly steady until the Great Recession. Then it started to drop off and took a dive after 2010, said report co-author Una Osili, associate dean for research and international programs at the Lilly School.
The decline amounts to 20 million fewer households donating to charity in 2016 (the most recent year for which data was available) versus 2000, researchers said.
The analysis drew on data from the Philanthropy Panel Study, a data set within the University of Michigan’s Panel Study of Income Dynamics, which tracks the same 9,000 families’ charitable giving every two years.
Americans are losing their religion
One factor driving the decline: Americans are becoming less likely to attend religious services or identify with a specific religion.
“Attending services is correlated with giving to religious organizations, but it’s also correlated with giving to secular groups,” Osili said.
Giving to charity is, of course, a core belief for many of the world’s major religions. And very religious people of any faith are more likely to give to charity, one study by Baylor University researchers found.

Or it may be the Scrooge effect: government ‘charity’, however ineffective, drives out personal charity by convincing people they already give.
this one gave up organized religion, which is what surveys measure. Faith in God has increased.
Shortly after, realized how even many christain organizations never seem to stop asking for more. Don’t give any more not because of money but don’t want to be a fool any more.
I’d say there are more with similar thoughts.
Another factor that has affected my personal giving this year has been the Trump tax cuts.
For the first time in over 30 years I ended up taking the standard deduction instead of itemizing. Turbo Tax determined that the standard deduction gave me a bigger refund than itemizing, even with a home mortgage.
So that “tax deductable” donation to “Save the Frogs” ends up not getting deducted. So this year “Save the Frogs” won’t get a check.
I used to give generously, even when it meant a hardship for my family. I gave of time, money, resources, and talent.
Then Obama happened and for several years I was told I was privileged because I was white (even though we were drowning in medical debt and could barely keep the roof over our heads).
When he was re-elected, I had enough. Charity would now begin at home. I haven’t donated to anything except church since. No more killing myself for people who would gladly take my money and call me a racist behind my back. There was no more joy in the sacrifice.
A lot of them get their moral high from buying organic and recycled and lecturing everyone else.
It may have something to do with the obnoxious leftism by some charities that many folks want no part in supporting.
They also have wised up and realized that 90% of the money winds up in the pockets of the Charity Administration personnel.
I give to a small group of charities we’ve vetted like Institute for Justice, Alliance Defending Freedom, our church. I somehow ended up on a ton of mailing lists for prior donations, because they share mailing lists. I don’t donate to any of the mailer solicitations anymore.
I donate items to the shelter and Operation Paperback. That does more for the troops than money to Wounded Warrior Project and other charities for vets.
After Chick-Fila’s betrayal, I took the very full small change jar and dumped it into the nearest Salvation Army kettle. My eldest daughter came with me, because I said that I meant I’d do that and had her see me do it. We’ve also stopped eating at Chick-Fila. We used to count that as charity, helping a Christian employer.
I’m an Atheist, and I’m more than happy to donate to charities as long as they are reputable. I even donate food to our local churches and both money and clothing to the Salvation Army. Every time I walk out of our local grocer during the holidays (which is up to thrice weekly), I donate to the SA bell ringer whatever I can.
Reputation is the biggest concern for me. I want to know that what I’m giving is going to the cause, where it is needed, and not the pocket of someone running the charity.
The new $24,000. “standard deduction” (married) isn’t helping charities either...only Mitt Romney comes close to that for charitable contributions/deductions! ;-) Should drop the standard deduction to zero and drop the tax rate to compensate (net zero). Also get rid of the EITC!

I used to give to so many charities THEN I discovered that Elizabeth Dole was making $500,000.00 a year from the Red Cross I was SO STUNNED I stopped donating to any one EXCEPT the Salvation Army!! There was also a bunch of corruption at Wounded Warriors (very disappointing) I just changed my entire outlook about charities!!! ALSO look at the BILLIONS of dollars that went to Haiti AND Haiti is NO BETTER today after ALL of that money sent to those organizations!!! I do send money to Samaritan’s Purse when they are headed to areas of natural disasters!!

So many charities, non profits, and foundations are controlled by Liberal leftists. I don’t care if some pro capitalist conservative sets up a foundation with lots of money and instructions on what to do. Over a short time it will be taken over and perverted to another use.
Bingo! I used to give to a veterans group and found out the heads of the damn thing were partying. Even the VFW is an overall scam. Heart Associations don’t give to people with heart problems, they give to lobbyists to get more grants for research. I spend on a local church to only keep up the church and property.
