Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Music in The Bible)

Psalm 47

Psalm 47[a]

For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.

1 Clap your hands, all you nations;
    shout to God with cries of joy.
2 For the Lord Most High is awesome,
    the great King over all the earth.
3 He subdued nations under us,
    peoples under our feet.
4 He chose our inheritance for us,
    the pride of Jacob, whom he loved.[b]

5 God has ascended amid shouts of joy,
    the Lord amid the sounding of trumpets.
6 Sing praises to God, sing praises;
    sing praises to our King, sing praises.
7 For God is the King of all the earth;
    sing to him a psalm of praise.

8 God reigns over the nations;
    God is seated on his holy throne.
9 The nobles of the nations assemble
    as the people of the God of Abraham,
for the kings[c] of the earth belong to God;
    he is greatly exalted.

Footnotes:

1. Psalm 47:1 In Hebrew texts 47:1-9 is numbered 47:2-10.
2. Psalm 47:4 The Hebrew has Selah (a word of uncertain meaning) here.
3. Psalm 47:9 Or shields

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Dear Father in Heaven,
Sanctified and Magnified
is Your Most Wonderful and Holy Name!
You Alone Are Worthy of Praise and Worship,
For You Alone Are The One True God.

Dear Father,
Cleanse Us All from unrighteousness,
Forgive us the sin of complacency in the face of cataclysmic world events,
and forgive us for not praying enough.
Teach us to recognize Your signs,
but not to make up our own meanings of them.
Do not allow us to try and manipulate people to our own agenda.
Please put a "check and balance" in our hearts if we try anything like that!
And most of all,
Dear Father,
Bring Redemption,
Peace and Prosperity to Your Holy Land,
and Your Chosen People.

For the Sake of Your Anointed,
and For The Sake of Your Name,
We pray for the Peace of Jerusalem,
For Israel,
According to Your Word,
and Your Promise.

We Pray For Our President,
And other Leaders of Our Beloved USA
May They Receive Wisdom from You
To do the Right Thing.
We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

ML/LTOS

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

This little story happened, a long time ago, to my brother Tom in the 10th grade in an urban Boston Public School.

Kenny, a recent immigrant from China had a heavy accent, and was getting aggravated with the realities of Inner-City High School life. In frustration, he blurted out at the teacher:

"Jeezus Krise, you always pickin' on me!!!"

My brother, who never minced words said;

"Hey, Watch it, Kenny! You don't hear us going around saying 'BUDDHA' when we're mad!"

Of course, the idea was ludicrous. Buddha was never considered a "god", so taking his name in vain would not be offensive. Furthermore, just because Kenny was Chinese, it did not mean he was a Buddhist. The whole episode was filled with assumptions. Kenny assumed that his exclamation was the American Way of expressing his frustration. Tom assumed that Kenny was deliberately taking the Lord's Name in vain. Tom also assumed that Kenny was a Buddhist, and would be properly shamed by the analogy. In truth, Kenny was probably from Red China, where all religions were being suppressed. It was a crazy incident, and has become part of our family "lore".

There are a number of passages in Scripture where Gentile Kings, from Pharaoh to Cyrus, refer to "The God of the Israelites". When the One True God judged those nations, He was actually judging their gods.

This categorization continues to this day, and many people assume that Germans are Lutheran, British are Anglican, Irish are Catholic, Arabs are Muslim, Chinese are Buddhists, and Indians are Hindu. There is a very long history of religion being linked to ethnicity.

The opening line of this wonderful Psalm is a joyous response to the first line in Psalm 2. Remember how Psalm 2 started?

"Why do the NATIONS rage?"

Now, here Psalm 47 begins:

"Clap your hands, all you NATIONS..."

The word means the same in both Psalms. The Psalmist is speaking of those who are not of the House of Israel, namely, GENTILES. This presumes a Truth that was nearly unknown in the Ancient World, that The One True God is the Lord of ALL People, regardless of their ethnic or racial origin. Is this Psalm an anticipation of the entire world eventually singing praises to The One True God? The Truth was never meant to be blended with other faith traditions to form a syncretistic "one world religion". But, as both Peter and Paul found out, the Good News is meant for all, regardless of their ethnic background.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
