Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Music in The Bible)

Psalm 44

Psalm 44[a]

For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil.[b]

1 We have heard it with our ears, O God;
    our ancestors have told us
what you did in their days,
    in days long ago.
2 With your hand you drove out the nations
    and planted our ancestors;
you crushed the peoples
    and made our ancestors flourish.
3 It was not by their sword that they won the land,
    nor did their arm bring them victory;
it was your right hand, your arm,
    and the light of your face, for you loved them.

4 You are my King and my God,
    who decrees[c] victories for Jacob.
5 Through you we push back our enemies;
    through your name we trample our foes.
6 I put no trust in my bow,
    my sword does not bring me victory;
7 but you give us victory over our enemies,
    you put our adversaries to shame.
8 In God we make our boast all day long,
    and we will praise your name forever.[d]

9 But now you have rejected and humbled us;
    you no longer go out with our armies.
10 You made us retreat before the enemy,
    and our adversaries have plundered us.
11 You gave us up to be devoured like sheep
    and have scattered us among the nations.
12 You sold your people for a pittance,
    gaining nothing from their sale.

13 You have made us a reproach to our neighbors,
    the scorn and derision of those around us.
14 You have made us a byword among the nations;
    the peoples shake their heads at us.
15 I live in disgrace all day long,
    and my face is covered with shame
16 at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me,
    because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.

17 All this came upon us,
    though we had not forgotten you;
    we had not been false to your covenant.
18 Our hearts had not turned back;
    our feet had not strayed from your path.
19 But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals;
    you covered us over with deep darkness.

20 If we had forgotten the name of our God
    or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
21 would not God have discovered it,
    since he knows the secrets of the heart?
22 Yet for your sake we face death all day long;
    we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.

23 Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep?
    Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever.
24 Why do you hide your face
    and forget our misery and oppression?

25 We are brought down to the dust;
    our bodies cling to the ground.
26 Rise up and help us;
    rescue us because of your unfailing love.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father In Heaven,
Magnified and Sanctified is Your Most Holy Name!
We Praise and Worship You and You Alone,
For You Are The ONE TRUE GOD.
Only You Are Worthy,
Only You Are Holy,
Only You Are To Be Worshiped.
We come before You as a small Body Of Believers
to Pray For Your Light and Your Truth,
According to Your Word in this Psalm.
We Cling To Your Promise That You Are Faithful
and That Your Mercies Are New Every Morning.
We Pray That The People of Israel
May Be Safe and Secure Within the Land.
We Pray That Your People will Seek You and Find You,
and Turn Their Hearts Toward You.
We pray that the evil schemes of the enemy will be thwarted,
and their leaders confused and discredited.
We Pray that those Americans,
who are deceived by the enemy into believing lies and propaganda
will OPEN THEIR EYES to the TRUTH.

For the Sake of Your Anointed,
and For The Sake of Your Name,
We pray for the Peace of Jerusalem,
For Israel,
According to Your Word,
and Your Promise.

We Pray For Our President,
And other Leaders of Our Beloved USA
May They Receive Wisdom from You
To do the Right Thing.
We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 44 is an Intercessory Prayer. The pronoun David uses for himself when addressing God is "We", meaning the whole Nation of Israel. Since we have a lot of Intercessory Prayer on this site, it is good to look at this as a possible model for this very important aspect of ministry.

Verses 1-8 recount the wonderful works of the Lord. It is a hymn of praise and thanksgiving for past victories. David is aware of the History of his People, and gives full credit to God for the amazing story of deliverance and success. Even my tagline, a quote from our President, accepts this fact. We need to know WHAT HAPPENED in order to be grateful. The censoring and revision of History, a la "1984's Ministry of Truth" is a sure -fire way to destroy a People from within.

Verses 9-16 sings of the desolation that comes when a People are forsaken by God. It is very grim, and contrasts sharply with the previous Stanza. It sounds a lot like the complaints of people who look back at "the Good Old Days", and bemoan the current state of Dystopia that surrounds them. It is not altogether out-of-line to state the obvious. Things can look awfully bad for a Nation that has strayed.

Verses 17-22 seem to be David protesting the innocence of his People. He may be speaking of the Remnant who have not forgotten God, and have kept His Covenant, but who are struggling because they are surrounded by wickedness. This possibility is reinforced by St. Paul in his letter to the Roman Christians, who are struggling to survive in a pagan empire (Chapter 8):

18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. 19 For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that[h] the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.

22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[i] have been called according to his purpose. 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

... 31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written:

“For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”[j]

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[k] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord...

Paul even quotes Today's Psalm!

The last four Verses form a Tag (Coda) in which David addresses God directly and pleads for Him to ARISE and help His People. The Intercessory Prayer can be for our own time, as it has a great outline:

1. Praise and Thanksgiving for God's Goodness

2. Confession of how far we have gone in the wrong direction (sin)

3. Pleading our "case" before God

4. Interceding, knowing that God will answer because of His Unfailing Love.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." (John 16:33)
