Colossians 1

The Supremacy of the Son of God

15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of[g] your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— 23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.

Our Father in Heaven

We pray in particular on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya and throughout the Mideast. The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."

Oh My Goodness! That's The Rock Upon Which I Sat Reading Colossians!

I hated what was supposedly the Subject called "Science" in High School. It meant either dissecting a frog or sitting on a stool in an antiquated lab listening to the teacher drone on and on about the Periodic Table and Valence Numbers. I chose the latter to avoid the frog, but I passed all the tests just by memorizing the stuff and then promptly forgetting it. (I have an incredible memory for music and experiences, but not so much for numbers). In spite of the incredible tedium of Science Class, I REALLY loved Nature, NASA, Science Fiction, and Outer Space. I eagerly devoured anything on TV that addressed these subjects, like The Twilight Zone, One Step Beyond, The Outer Limits, and, OF COURSE, STAR TREK (The Original Series). When Boston's PBS Station started producing NOVA (Real Science) I watched it faithfully and made up for all the hours I sat on that rickety lab stool in the decrepit lab listening to the droning voice spouting numbers. I got excited about the Universe, about Quantum Theory, String Theory, Sub-Atomic Particles, Plate Tectonics, Geology, Marine Biology, you name it! Now, of course, these programs are all over cable, but back then, NOVA was the ONLY one.

My husband actually DID like Science, and, even though he went to an antiquated inner-city high school just like me, he was exposed to a slightly better Science program than I was. He liked to talk about things like Einstein's search for "The Unified Field Theory", which, in simplest terms, was the question of how atoms (and thus the entire Universe) held together without spinning off into chaos. To this day, scientists speak of this question, raising ideas about "Dark Matter", Parallel Universes, String Theory, etc. In fact I just saw a program about this last night. So it is a very real question that has puzzled scientists for a long time.

Anyway, there were Mike and I sitting on the rock (pictured above) at Houghton's Pond in the Autumn of 1981. And I was reading today's Passage out loud. Suddenly, Mike touched my arm and said, "Read That part again."

So I did.

"He is before all things, and in Him, all things hold together."

Then we both looked at each other and laughed out loud. Then, simultaneously, without any coaching, we blurted out:

IT'S THE UNIFIED FIELD THEORY!!!!!

I love moments like that.

Also, I had a church-service flashback: Sitting there, waiting to the scripture reading, the guest minister said, “Today we’re going to study galoshes....” Had some confusion. Then, finally figured out that he said “Colossians.” Have I mentioned that my hearing isn’t too good?
